www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday December 20, 2006 - 11 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Grinches wrecked light display When I read your article regarding the Oakville Beaver showing off festive lighting displays around Oakville, I felt compelled to contact you. This year I decided to do a little more lights than usual at my parent's house, who live on a quiet east end crescent, as we just found out that my mother's cancer has returned and she will be resuming another round of radiation soon. I felt we all needed some added festivity and sparkles and at the last warm stint we had a couple weeks ago I embarked on my task. To my total dismay, a week ago I showed up at my parents one evening to find that most of the lights were out on one large bush by the front door. Upon a closer look I found to my amazement over 34 bulbs missing! I carried on my search to an enormous shrub that I covered in lights and that had close to 50 bulbs missing the strands were still there, but someone took the time to unscrew all those bulbs one by one. I thought this was a time of "Peace on Earth, Good Will towards Man" and I'm sorry that someone had this much time on their hands to do something so senseless. I'm sorry to say that my parents cannot submit their slideshow to you. Not that it was of any comparison to most of the displays around. We will just have to take my Mom out to see them. Merry Christmas to your readers, and to the people who did this...bah humbug. B. SIMPSON Letter writer displayed Scrooge-like attitude Re: Poor could use save the tree funds, Oakville Beaver, Dec. 15 With respect to Peter Swirzon's letter last week I couldn't believe that such a Scrooge-like attitude was demonstrated so close to Christmas. Oakville has finally demonstrated some vision to the future by acknowledging that our trees and natural areas are treasures that should be protected for future generations. Although I am not a part of the group, I applaud this organization who by my math has raised almost 72 per cent of its goal. Ward 4 Regional Councillor Allan Elgar is correct in stating that the Region's top-up portion is simply a drop in the bucket. The author makes a dubious link between raising funds for an "old tree" and helping the poor. I don't believe they are mutually exclusive items; I see no reason why our citizens would not do both. In fact, I hope that I do meet some of these citizens in church this holiday season so that I may thank them for their selfless desire to preserve a vital part of our heritage. It was even more ironic reading that Burlington Councillor Jack Dennison voted against the Region's motion to Save the Tree as he was concerned with taxpayers' funds. Is this not the same councillor that is severely delinquent paying his own current business taxes at his health and fitness club? Bah Humbug to both Mr. Swirzon and Mr. Dennison! What on earth makes him think that people will contribute only to one thing at the expense of another? I have always contributed to the Salvation Army, and can't imagine not doing so in the future. This year I am also making a one-time contribution towards saving the beautiful old tree, as I think too many such things are destroyed for the sake of convenience. I do not believe anyone, including Mr. Swirzon, contributes all their disposable income to good causes, and the money sent to the tree fund would likely have gone to buying another plant or two for my own garden.
