Fraser Smith gave the Blades an early lead but Buffalo evened the score in the opening minute of the second. Lindsay Sparks would put the Blades ahead to stay six minutes later and Smith padded the lead with his 16th goal in the last 17 games. Daniel Borges added a late second-period goal and another midway through the third. The two victories kept the Blades (29-5-1-1) a point in front of the Brampton Capitals in the West Conference standings. Although the break for the holiday could potentially halt the Blades' momentum -- they've won 19 of their last 20 games -- they do have a favourable schedule in January. The Blades don't play either of their main rivals -- Brampton and Hamilton -- in their next nine games. And only two of those games are against teams playing better than .500 hockey. As if that's not enough, Cody Goloubef should be back early in the new year, further bolstering an already impressive lineup. Edwards said with the team currently carrying just 21 players, the Blades will be looking to add a couple of players before the Jan. 10 trade deadline to provide some depth for what he hopes is a long playoff run. Notes: As if a 13-game winning streak isn't dominating enough, the Blades have won 12 of those games by three or more goals. In the only game they didn't win by three or more, Oakville rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the final 10 minutes before beating Burlington in overtime.... The Blades have killed 31 straight penalties and opponents are 3-for-62 (4.8 per cent) on the power play in December.... Saturday's game in Buffalo was postponed due to unavailability of ice. -- Herb Garbutt can be reached at sports@oakvillebeaver.com.
