Burton has an Edge By Sabrina Byrnes OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF year-end clearance Oakville Mayor Rob Burton turned a few heads with his upset victory over long-time mayor Ann Mulvale in November and now he'll be turning heads with the car that he drives. On Friday, Burton took possession of a brand new 2007 Ford Edge and became the first in Oakville and one of the first few in Canada to receive one of the new Oakville-built, cross-over utility vehicles (CUV). "It's the first Edge delivered from an Oakville dealership in Oakville and we're very pleased that it went to the mayor of Oakville," said Kerri Stoakley Marketing, Sales and Service Public Affairs Manager for Ford of Canada. Although the 2007 Ford Edge (CUV), along with the Lincoln MKX, have been rolling off the assembly line at Ford of Canada's Oakville Assembly Complex since October, delivery to dealerships was delayed until the past two weeks due to production problems. With the problems ironed out, Burton picked up his car at Oak-land Ford Lincoln on Friday morning. He was presented his keys by Bill Osborne, President and CEO of Ford Motor Company of Canada Ltd. "We are very honoured that Mayor Burton has chosen to drive an Edge as his personal vehicle. We are very proud that this all-new, exciting product is built at Oakville Assembly," stated Osborne in a recent press release. Burton said that he chose the Edge as his new car of purchase because it was an Oakville-built car. "After I got elected, I realized I needed to buy a new car anyway. I did a little bit of research and I decided that since I'm the mayor of the town that Ford helped build, I should probably feel lucky if I could drive a car that Oakville helped Ford build," stated Burton. Prior to purchasing the Edge, Burton drove a Mazda Tribute. "Once I decided that I wanted a car from this category, and I realized that it's an Oakville built car, it got harder and harder to think of anybody else's car." At approximately 8:05 a.m., a construction road compactor accidentally hit an aluminum street light pole, which knocked into one of Oakville Hydro's overhead circuits and caused the power to go out, said director of operations, Bruce Evans. "When that happened, it shorted the circuit and caused a very large blackout," Evans said, adding it affected 4,200 customers in both residences and commercial areas. The accident occurred just north of Dundas, causing a blackout in the area bounded by Dundas, Bronte, the QEW and Dorval. "They're doing a lot of construction up in that area with the new road. It was an accident, but they caused fairly major interruptions to a lot of customers," said Evans, who added the power wasn't back on until just after 9 a.m. It took about an hour, he noted, to find the problem and get everything back to normal condition. "A concerned citizen called in to indicate they had seen the problem and saw there was a huge explosion when the aluminum pole stuck our wire," said Evans. That was one of many calls Oakville Hydro received yesterday from customers who wondered why they were in the dark, he added.
