www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Sunday December 24, 2006 - 5 Salvation Army still needs help to reach fundraising goal Despite a groundswell of support of more volunteers and increased donations, the Oakville Salvation Army's Kettle Campaign could still fall short of its $110,000 goal. On Thursday, Aisha King, Community Services Coordinator for The Salvation Army, said the campaign had collected $64,000 in kettle donations. This was double the $32,000 total reported in The Oakville Beaver on Dec. 13, but still short of the $110,000 goal. According to King, the story generated a number of calls from people interested in volunteering and wishing to donate money. But time is running out. The campaign ends Dec. 23, but the kettles will be on site at the annual Fairway Hills luminary display on Christmas Eve. The Kettle Campaign, which kicked off Nov. 17 during the Downtown BIA Treelighting ceremony, is The Salvation Army's largest fundraising campaign. Last year the Kettle Campaign raised more than $106,000 and this year the goal had been increased to $110,000 because the needs of the community are higher. The funding from the Kettle Campaign goes to support the Community and Family Services program, which helps run the Food Bank, provide clothing vouchers to those in need, and provide assistance on a caseby-case basis. Oakville man killed on Hwy 403 A driver who was killed when his car rolled over repeatedly on Hwy. 403 in Mississauga Tuesday night, wasn't wearing his seatbelt, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say. Police have identified the victim as 40-year-old Graham Murphy of Oakville. Police say the vehicle Murphy was driving was travelling at a high rate of speed on the westbound Hwy. 403 near Mavis Road when it suddenly veered into the embankment at around 9:15 p.m., rolling over several times. "It looks like they tried to take the off-ramp and swerved back on to the highway before rolling over," OPP Sgt. Chris Whaley said. OPP Cst. David Woodford said Murphy was ejected from the vehicle, which then landed on top of him. Murphy was airlifted to Sunnybrook hospital in Toronto with serious injuries and died early Wednesday morning.
