4- The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday December 30, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com Lozon to lead Canada's cancer strategy Continued from page 3 proper agreements in place with the federal government and a headquarters has also to be established, though Lozon expects it will be located in the Toronto area. The new agency, or at least the idea of it, is not at all new. Lozon said its impending establishment is the result of more than a half dozen years of consultation and research by healthcare providers, other service providers, politicians and patients. "A national approach will be very constructive and very helpful," said Lozon. While Lozon said the description of himself as Canada top healthcare executive is not one he'd apply to himself, he admits, "I know my way around finances pretty well," and said, "I like dealing with big challenges." "All Canadians and all levels of government need to be concerned about the incidence and prevalence of cancer," said Lozon who said it's expected cancer "I seem to have an ability to bring people together to pursue a common goal." Jeff Lozon, president/CEO St. Michael's Hospital B r nd Swim sa s a will replace heart disease as the number one killer of Canadians. Anticipated substantial progress in dealing with cancer lies in a national approach for Canada on what is an international challenge, according to Lozon who said he's not really suited to being a doctor or a politician, but admits to having leadership ability to offer. "I seem to have an ability to bring people together to pursue a common goal," said Lozon. Prior to coming to Toronto, Lozon was president and CEO of the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta -- Canada's largest specialty rehabilitation referral centre. Prior to that he was executive director of Manitoba Health Organizations Inc. in Winnipeg, Manitoba; director of Medical Services then Outpatient Services at the University of Alberta Hospital and a financial policy analyst at Ontario's Kingston General Hospital. Lozon's leadership ability will come in handy as the new agency strives to bring Jeff Lozon Canada's provinces and federal governments together on the issue of cancer, its treatments and research. "Federal/provincial collaboration is always tough to achieve," said Lozon, who is also obviously a realist -- but notes he has a "fair bit of experience" to his credit. A new collaborative approach will aim to provide a more universal, national approach -- from diagnosis and treatment, to drugs. Not all areas of the country offer the same access and timeliness to patients as services are provided by the provinces and territories. The new agency will also act as a clearing house for information and best practices -- centralizing information sharing across the country -- another means of improving services. Lozon who has a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Guelph, a Masters in Health Administration from the University of Alberta and the Honourary Doctor of Civil Laws from Bishops University said he has never considered a career as a doctor. Rather, his strength is in his leadership abilities. And that's what Harper -- and many cancer patients across Canada -- are counting on. -- Angela Blackburn can be reached at angela@oakvillebeaver.com. ts ui H U R RY I N , S A L E E N D S S U N D AY J A N U A RY 7 T H , 5 P M !
