Previous prize-winning incarnations for these creative fellows have included donning homemade fishing huts last year and appearing as a six-pack of `Polar' beer the year before. "It's a good cause," said Melito. "We never think twice about not having access to water." The charitable focus of the Courage Brothers' Polar Bear Dip was also the attraction for 12-yearold Crystal Shortall. Last year the Grade 7 student from Mississauga took the plunge in the local event for the first time. She begged her mom to let her do it after watching news reports about the annual Jan. 1 event. "I feel good helping others," said Shortall. But after she dove into the chilly water in 2006, she told her mom, Sharon not to let her ever do it again. "It was so-o-o cold." But true to her philanthropic nature Shortall signed up again for this year's Polar Bear Dip and raised $137. This time, she prepared for the temperature shock by hopping in and out of a cold bathtub at home. The balmy 9-Celsius air temperature also made it easier to attend this year's dip, said Shortall. It took less than 10 minutes for every one of the people standing in the long snaking line, to dunk themselves in the water. There were also an estimated 5,000 spectators at the park cheering for them and standing at the ready to quickly hand over blankets, towels, dry clothes and shoes to the charitably-minded teeth chattering participants. Peter Turkington, volunteer public relations spokesperson for the event, said the final tally will surpass the $41,000 total raised by Polar Bear Dippers. Volunteers are still counting the cash donations collected from spectators at the event on Monday and recording the hundreds of online donations that must be added to the final tally. Organizers Todd and Trent Courage attributed the smooth operation of this year's event to the masses of volunteers who put it together beforehand and on the day of the dip. "It's incredible volunteers such as Cheryl Singleton, Brian Betsworth, Peter Turkington, Dave Butt, Ed Howell, Steve Smithers, Steve O'Brien, Gaye Courage, Ken Broad, Anna Fanizza, Jim Coughlin, as well as many others, who make it all easy for us," said Trent Courage.
