www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday January 3, 2007 - 7 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Coverage has helped Kerr Street Ministries grow The year has drawn to a close and I need to express our deep appreciation to The Oakville Beaver for the excellent coverage it has given us. The publicity and reporting of major events such as our launch of the Dream Centre Campaign, the Partners to End Child Poverty program, the inaugural 5ksm Run for Hope and our 10th Anniversary celebration provided excellent awareness and drew wonderful response, drawing the community together to serve those who have been disadvantaged for any number of reasons. It enables us to serve as a catalyst for the hundreds of volunteers, churches, service clubs, schools, businesses, government agencies and professional service providers who collectively serve hundreds of children and youth and their families through the summer day camp and after school programs. This past year, because of the generosity of the community we were able to distribute over $1 million in goods and services to families who simply aren't able to make ends meet after covering housing and other basic necessities in life. So thank you, people of Oakville, for your kindness to others. My prayer for each of you this next year is that you will prosper beyond your imagination, and the spirit of generosity within the Town will continue. RON SHANTZ, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR KERR STREET MINISTRIES oakvillebeaver Saving old oak tree was positive experience I believe the media has an important role to monitor our politicians, and certainly keeping track of elections promises is part of that. But I am puzzled why you would take on what has largely been reported as a positive outcome by the national and international press to save "our Olde Oak Tree." Nothing in recent memory has generated so broad a positive media exposure of Oakville citizens and three levels of government working together to solve a problem. Your editorial is the only negative media comment on this process. If you are going to battle the mayor, you can pick your battles much more wisely. I am personally proud to be part of a community where the common citizen can work together with the Town, Regional and Provincial governments. Be part of this before you are left behind.
