32 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday January 10, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Three-way race for top spot in Jr. A hockey standings By Jon Kuiperij BEAVER SPORTS EDITOR Despite a recent 15-game winning streak, the Oakville Blades still find themselves in a tight three-way race for top spot in the Provincial Junior A Hockey League's West Conference. Entering last night's game in Bramalea, the Blades (31-6-1-1) held a one-point lead on the Brampton Capitals with 10 games left in the regular season. The Hamilton Red Wings, meanwhile, lurked two points behind Oakville and held a game in hand on the Blades. Oakville head coach and general manager Don Edwards said the team's main priority is finishing first or second, meaning the Blades would hold home ice advantage in at least the first two rounds of the upcoming playoffs. "That's what we're shooting for," said Edwards. "We'll just have to look after our own business and it will be determined, but we want the No. 1 or No. 2 slot for sure." Oakville appears to have a favourable schedule the rest of the way. The Blades have two games remaining with the Milton IceHawks (8-24-4-2) and Buffalo Jr. Sabres (527-5), as well as matches with the Bramalea Blues (1-331-2), Burlington Cougars (22-10-4-3) and Streetsville Derbys (17-16-3-2). Oakville will also face each of its closest pursuers once more this year, hosting Brampton Jan. 26 and Hamilton Feb. 2. The Blades returned to action last weekend after a twoweek Christmas break, dumping the Derbys 4-2 Friday at Dominion Twin Rinks before having their 15-game win streak snapped in Georgetown the following night. Edwards felt the lengthy layoff caught up with his club Saturday. "We just made a few too many errors," he said. "It really wasn't an issue of what (the Raiders) did, but more what we gave them." Scott Judson and Nick McParland scored for Oakville in Saturday's loss, with assists going to Trevor Elliott, Brent Clarke, Brandon DeFazio and Daniel Borges. Georgetown scored three second-period goals to take a 31 lead, then held off the Blades down the stretch and sealed the win with a pair of late empty-netters. Friday, the Blades got goals from Tomas Sample, Domenic Monardo, Chase Langeraap and Clarke. Assists went to Lindsay Sparks, Anthony Pototschnik, Paul Conter, Elliott, Sample and McParland, while Matt Hoyle stopped 21 shots to earn the win in net. The Blades are scheduled to play two home games this weekend, hosting Burlington Friday and Milton Saturday. Both contests are slated for 7:30 p.m. starts. Oakville could feature a new player or two for those games, with the league's trade deadline tonight at midnight and Edwards saying Monday that he was considering several personnel moves. NOTES: Blades defenceman Jordan Ogilvie and goaltender Kori Coelho will represent the club at tonight's Future Stars games in Georgetown. The Future Stars games will feature 88 players from across the league, with 16-year-old Jr. A-carded players and 17-year-old undrafted players participating. The North and East conferences will square off at 6:30, followed at 8:30 by the South/West contest... Edwards expects the Blades will send 3-5 players to the league's all-star game Jan. 24 in Markham. Candidates include Elliott (13th in league scoring with 56 points), Langeraap (28 goals in 39 games), Fraser Smith (18 goals in 23 games with the Blades), Coelho (12-2-0-1, 1.86 goals-against average) and Hoyle (18-5-1-3, 2.82 GAA)... As part of their 40th-anniversary season, the Blades and their alumni will face the Toronto Maple Leafs alumni and former NHL stars in an exhibition game Jan. 27 at Dominion Twin Rinks.
