On Sunday, Feb. 25 Oakville students will try to topple the American Hockey League Attendance record of 2,784 set by the City of Vaughan last Nov. 9. "Oakville Night" at Ricoh Coliseum will witness Western Canada's Manitoba Moose take on the Toronto Marlies. Tickets cost $15 per person with proceeds benefiting the Bronte Butterfly Foundation and Kinsmen Club of Oakville. Oakville high school student senators will be seeking support for and generating awareness of the Bronte Butterfly Foundation as they set their sights on seating 3,000 of their peers at the game to beat the attendance record. Prizes await the top schools and students sending the most Oakvillians to the Ricoh Coliseum including a framed autographed Marlie jersey. Tickets will be available Jan. 15 from the students, the Kinsmen or by calling the Bronte Butterfly Foundation 905-8252245. "We are very fortunate to have such great young people supporting this new fundraising initiative for the Butterfly. When student senators from both Halton school boards were introduced to the idea, they jumped on it with great enthusiasm encouraging each other to get involved," said Ralph Robinson, chair of the Bronte Butterfly Foundation. Abbey Park High School student, Meagan McKeen has challenged Chris Hurley of St. Ignatius of Loyola Secondary School to see which school will send the most students and supporters to the game. St. Thomas Aquinas senator Jaclyn Peluso is challenging Holy Trinity Secondary to beat their numbers and Iroquois Ridge students Gurveer Kehal and Adam Mitchell are challenging Oakville Trafalgar High School's students to try and out number them. Student senators have leadership roles within their schools and often encourage active student participation in activities that benefit the community. This initiative provides the opportunity to do both. Showcasing student leadership, team building, organizational, marketing and management skills in a real life environment will prove a win-win for all involved. The Bronte Butterfly Foundation is a not-for-profit, registered charitable organization with a mandate to create an interactive learning environment for children and visitors to Halton. This natural Butterfly Park and Winter Skateway will be built on the shores of Lake Ontario alongside historic Bronte Harbour in southwest Oakville. The Foundation is now on the last leg of the capital campaign to complete this community initiative and asks for your support of this campaign and the events that will ensure the completion of the Butterfly Park and Winter Skateway.
