Oakville Optimist Club President Wayne Thomas was on hand at the Y this week to pledge a $2,500 donation to the Y's Annual Giving Campaign for 2007. "We are happy to help the Y in any way we can," said Thomas. "We have a mandate to provide service to youth in the local community and the YMCA of Oakville definitely fits that mandate." The not-for-profit Optimist Club of Oakville has contributed to the Oakville community since the late 1940s. Its passion is to `make our community and the world a better place for our youngest and most vulnerable citizens.' The club gets involved in as many local events as possible and raises funds for numerous causes. In September its holds its annual Shrimpfest and at Christmas its sells Christmas trees at Hopedale Mall. Members include a cross-section of enthusiastic individuals from business, industry, agriculture and many professions. The Optimist Club of Oakville was one of the first service clubs to donate to the YMCA of Oakville's Capital Campaign to build the new Rebecca Street facility, and continues to support the Y's work. YMCA CEO Bruce Ireland commented that the Optimist Club has been very involved over the years with Youth Basketbal Canada (YBC) and other programs. "The Optimist Club is a firm and long-time community supporter that understands the Y's mission to provide access to YMCA programs and services for all Oakville youth."
