Wednesday, Jan. 24. It will be held at 7 p.m. at Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) with displays and refreshments at 6:30 p.m. and the seminar commencing at 7 p.m. OTMH is located at 327 Reynolds St. Dr. Gail Macpherson will discuss the latest research in smoking and health and the latest advances in smoking cessation. In Canada alone smoking kills 47,000 people a year and the annual cost on the healthcare system is over $15 billion. Smoking causes approximately 30 per cent of all cancers in Canada and about 85 per cent of lung cancers. More than 75 per cent of deaths from oral and pharyngeal cancers are caused by tobacco, whether smoked or chewed. Of the 75,000 that die per year as a result of heart disease and stroke in Canada, 18,000 die as a result of smoking. Smokers are 18 times more likely to be infected by periodontal bacteria than non-smokers resulting in tooth and bone loss. The healing capacity of a smoker is only 28 per cent to that of a non-smoker. Some benefits of quitting can be seen very quickly while others take longer. After eight hours oxygen levels in the blood are increased to normal. After 48 hours chances of having a heart attack start to diminish and the senses of smell and taste begin to improve. Seventy two hours later it's easier to breathe. In two to three months circulation improves and in six months there's a decrease in coughing, sinus congestion, fatigue and shortness of breath. One year after quitting smoking there will be a 50 per cent reduction in the risk of a smoking-related heart attack. After 10 years a 50 per cent reduction in risk of death from lung cancer and in 15 years your risk of death is equivalent to that of a person who has never smoked.
