www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday January 24, 2007 - 29 Poets invited to make submissions for poetry month events CCARE benefit Friday With April, Canada's national poetry month, fast approaching, local poets are being asked to prepare for two public readings to showcase their art. The first event scheduled for April 8, from 2-4 p.m., is entitled Poetry with a Conscience. Participants are encouraged to write poems focusing on Earth Day and International Women's Day, but poems on topics such as abuse, environmental concerns, civil rights, famine, women's rights, children's rights, etc. will also be accepted. This event will begin with the music of Julie Cutler. The second event planned for April. 11, from 7-9 p.m., is entitled Poetry Erotica. This event will feature poems concerning sexual love and desire, which means they can also be about a lack of sexual love and desire. Strings of words referring to body parts or sexual acts will not be accepted. In order to read at either event, e-mail copies of the proposed poems as individual attachments. Only poems submitted in advance will be read at the events. As was the case last year, it is expected there will be more volunteers to read than there is time so those wishing to read are encouraged to reply early.Only e-mail notices will be accepted so there will be a time stamp on every submission. Both events will be held at the Moonshine Café at 137 Kerr st. All inquires and submissions should go to Elka Ruth Enola, Coordinator, Poetry Oakville 07 at ere@sympatico.ca. Canadian Central American Relief Effort-CCARE will celebrate its seventh annual Grand Latin Dinner and Dance on Friday. The gala will be held at Le Treport Banquet Hall, 1075 The Queensway East, Mississauga. The fundraising dinner will see cocktails served at 7 p.m., dinner at 8 p.m. There will be live music, professional dancers and dinner. Entertainment will include performances by Latin Energy Dance Co. Tickets cost $35. The funds raised will support CCARE's ongoing aid projects in the Merendon Mountains in Guatemala. Mirrors hurt body image and exercise (NC)--We're constantly being told that exercise is good for us: good for our health, good for our moods, good for fun. Truth be told, we exercise mostly to shape our bodies. We want to look toned and trim. Our body image and our willingness to exercise, appears to be negatively affected if we exercise in a mirrored environment. Dr Martin Ginis and colleagues at McMaster University found that even women with good body image felt worse about their bodies after exercising in a mirrored room. Constantly checking out our bodies in reflective surfaces encourages us to judge them negatively, comparing them to an unrealistic ideal. "Get rid of the mirrors" suggests Merryl Bear, director of the National Eating Disorder Information Centre, www.nedic.ca. "Let's celebrate and enjoy our capacity to move in different ways". "Physical activity is important to our physical and mental wellbeing," says Bear. "We need to ensure that the exercise that we do is good for us many individuals use excessive exercise to try and manage their emotions through controlling their weight and bodies." On the other hand, says Bear, individuals who don't get enough exercise are missing out on both the joy of being able to move their bodies well, and the health benefits of being active. - News Canada FREE D BLOWanRY y *New Clien Financing A vailable 0.A.C. with ice colour serv ly ts On Colour Correction, Hair Extensions & Japanese Hair Straightening 518 POSTRIDGE DRIVE 905.257.7427 www.colouraddiction.com Shanna Heard, RMT REGISTERED MASSAGE THERAPIST The Studio Spa is is the Best Valu in Oakville Facial: all skin ty cluding Wrinkles Rosacea Acne (905) 337-9998 www.nazarfamilychiropractic.com 135 Lakeshore Road West, Oakville (Beside Baskin Robbins: Free Parking in Rear) Manicure: Elegant Classic style Pedicure: Soft as Silk Pamper that special someone with a gift certificate.
