www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday January 26, 2007 - 19 CATCHing healthy fun at the Oakville YMCA T here was a lot of shaking going on last week at the YMCA of Oakville, as the Y hosted Canadian Flaghouse consultant Steve Lusk and YMCA of Rochester's CATCH Program Director, Kristen Rusho to talk about `CATCH'. The room was full of folks eager to learn more, including representatives from Parks and Recreation Toronto, the YMCA of Niagara, and the Boys & Girls Club in Oshawa. CATCH short for Coordinated Approach to Child Health is a set of evidence-based programs developed by the University of Texas designed to promote physical activity and healthy food choices, and prevent tobacco use in elementary school-aged children. By teaching children that eating healthy and being physically active every day can be fun, the CATCH Program has proven that establishing healthy habits in childhood can promote behaviour changes that can last a lifetime. Rusho presented some dramatic U.S. statistics indicating a striking increase in obesity among children since 1992. In Canada, the overweight/obesity rate among adolescents aged 12 to 17 stands at 29 per cent -- more than doubling between 1978 and 2004, according to Statistics Canada. This health problem is leading to issues like Type II Diabetes in children as young as six years of age where age 65 used to be the norm. Rusho spoke about the active programs and emphasis on healthy snacks and nutrition for the kids, and the interest that she has seen from kids in Rochester. "Kids sit all day in school, then go home and watch TV or play on the computer or do homework. It's tough on the kids to change, but if you do it and make it fun and exciting the children will come." And CATCH has the results that prove that the programs work. A study of afterschool programs showed that children were only moving vigorously 38 per cent of the time in these programs before CATCH, and CATCH was able to increase this level to over 60 per cent. Rusho explained that the CATCH program uses games and activities that keep every child moving all the time, rather than games like baseball that only involve a few children in motion at one time. In the largest school-based health promotion study ever done in the U.S., CATCH was proven to: · Decrease the fat in school lunches · Increase the activity level in Physical Education · Show lasting improvements in children's health-related behaviours In a further study, CATCH was shown to reduce the rate of child obesity. Quentin Budd, Coordinator of Child and Youth Programs at the YMCA of Oakville is excited to be able to incorporate CATCH principles and programming into the Y's line-up of programs for youth. "CATCH is a mixture of everything a kid needs to live healthy...it's all about incorporating skills for healthy living into everyday life." Some examples of healthy snacks from CATCH include: · one cup of enriched dry whole grain cereal with one cup dried fruit and 1 cup of low-fat milk · One ounce of pita chips, one cup hummus and one cup 100 per cent fruit juice · yogurt parfait alternate layers of low-fat yogurt, low fat granola and unsweetened fresh or frozen berries.
