The familiar cue used to instill manners in toddlers would likely prompt a sneer, even a grunt were a teen asked the same question. Somehow, between the years, manners fall by the wayside. Lisa Rosano is determined to change that. The part-time youth counselor and event planner has just launched Charmed Integrity School of Canada. For a $200-$250 fee, Romano sets out to do what Mr. Thackeray (Sidney Poitier) did for his uncouth students in To Sir With Love -- transform ill-mannered youth into polite men and women. She's the Miss Manner's of the north, reviving the charm school era that was popular among the cotillion crowd in the 1940s. Lessons include walking while balancing a book on the top of the head to improve posture, learning how to shake a hand gracefully and conducting oneself in a roomful of people with finesse. She's passing on what her parents, books and life in the corporate world has taught her, by parlaying it into this entrepreneurial adventure. "I intend to give youth an advantage," said Rosano. "Often its simply a case of reminding them what they already know and conveying to them the benefits of basic manners." Riley Boyd, 19, is a protégé of Rosano's teaching and a budding magician. "I learned how to speak to a group with confidence, by being friendly initially, making eye contact, smiling, to project my voice and find my confidence." Evening and day classes are held in locally, in Toronto, Mississauga and Hamilton for youths aged 10 to 14, 15-19 and adults. Her mission is to bring integrity, etiquette and selfimprovement back into the Canadian way of life, one student at a time. Until then, she offers a few tips for parents eager to introduce these ideas at home: · Praise children when they use their manners and speak politely. · Help them understand that if they have manners and etiquette that, most of the time, they will get what they want from adults and others will want to be around them. · Give children plenty of opportunities to practice setting a table, using utensils correctly, answering the telephone in a polite manner, and interacting with others calmly.
