www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday January 26, 2007 - 45 Small Dolphins squad makes big splash in pool What the Dolphins Swim Club lacked in quantity, it made up for in quality at tast weekend's 11-and-under competition in London. The Dolphins sent the smallest contingent of swimmers among all the clubs participating in the meet, but the 12 swimmers combined to win 27 gold medals, 14 silver and 11 bronze. The overall high-point performers of the competition were nine-year-old Conor Russell and 11-year-old Lauren Dixon. Both competitors posted personalbest times to receive top male and female of the meet honours, respectively. Olivia Sbaraglia won the nine-year-old high-point position and swam well enough to join her teammates at the Ontario Age Group Provincial Swimming Championships, meeting provincial time standards in the 200-metre backstroke and 400m freestyle. Cassandra Pedro finished third overall in 11-and-under high points as all Dolphins swimmers had at least one personal-best time during the competition and combined to break six club records. Winning gold at the meet were Sbaraglia (50m, 100m and 200m freestyle, 100m and 200m backstroke), Russell (100m, 200m and 400m freestyle, 100m and 200m backstroke, 50m and 100m butterfly, and 200m individual medley), Dixon (50m and 200m breaststroke, 100m freestyle) and Pedro (50m, 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle). With their athletes coming off an intense Christmas training camp, Dolphins coaches were pleased to see the youngsters come up with their best efforts to date, and feel it bodes well for the upcoming seasons.
