www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday January 27, 2007 - 37 OVERWEIGHT? Women get wise on heart health February is Heart Month and members of the public are invited to attend a free seminar entitled Heart Health for Women Wednesday, Feb. 7. It's at 7 p.m. at LeDome Banquet Hall, 1173 North Service Rd. E. The seminar is organized by Halton Healthcare Services, in partnership with the Women's Health Alliance of Halton and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario. Dr. Michael Heffernan, a Cardiologist practicing in Oakville, and on Active Staff at Halton Healthcare, OakvilleTrafalgar Memorial Hospital site, will be presenting. Many people think of heart disease as a male health problem, however, heart disease is the leading cause of death in women. Women tend to be safeguarded from heart disease prior to menopause because of the protective effect of estrogen, but not always. For example, pre-menopausal women with diabetes have similar risk to men of the same age because diabetes cancels out the protective effect estrogen provides. In the past, it was believed that women had different warning signals than men. This may not be the case. Both women and men may experience typical or non-typical symptoms such as nausea, sweating, pain in the arm, throat, jaw or pain that is unusual. However, women may describe their pain differently than men. Nevertheless, the most common symptom in women is still chest pain. Since heart disease and stroke are Canada's leading cause of death, it's important to understand how to take steps to lessen the chances of these serious illnesses. A great place to start is to learn to identify and control your risk factors. While you can't control your age, family history, gender or ethnicity, there are many other risk factors obesity, diabetes, smoking, high blood pressure and elevated blood cholesterol that you can control. Displays and refreshments will be available from 6:30 pm and the seminar will commence at 7 p.m. To register, and for information, call 905-338-4379 or e-mail elittle@haltonhealthcare.on.ca. OAKVILLE 627 LYONS LANE, SUITE 203, OAKVILLE 905.339.1397 Cancer Society applauds move to colorectal screening The Canadian Cancer Society and its various chapters, like the Oakville Unit, are applauding the Ontario government's recent decision to fund colorectal cancer screening in Ontario. Ontario is the first province in Canada to take the life-saving initiative. "Colorectal cancer is one of the highest causes of cancer deaths in Ontario and yet the disease is preventable and treatable if detected early. A comprehensive population-based screening program will save lives," said Peter Goodhand, CEO, Ontario Division, Canadian Cancer Society. In Ontario, an estimated 1,650 men and 1,450 women died of colorectal cancer in 2006. After lung cancer, it is the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths for men and women combined. The Canadian Cancer Society recommends men and women age 50 and over have a fecal occult blood test (FOBT) every two years. Follow-up for a positive test should include a colonoscopy or double contrast barium enema (an x-ray of the large intestine) and flexible sigmoidoscopy.
