8- The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday February 3, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Catholic board wants performance appraisal process appraised Trustees agree to seek opinion of outside consultant By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Halton Catholic District School Board trustees will be going outside the organization to see if the current performance appraisal process for their director needs review. "We're going to, at the next board meeting, pass the motion for the recommenda- tion that came forward this evening," said school board chair Al Bailey. "What will happen at that point is we'll send an RFP (request for proposal) out for a consultant to come in, who has experience in school board operations and management, and have him work with us and try to find a way to make sure what we've got is a process that is agreeable to everybody, is workable and gets results," he said. The trustees shied away from the task at a board meeting last week, several citing that they didn't feel qualified to handle the review themselves. As Bailey explained, finding a professional is warranted, as the director's performance appraisal process is very significant. "At the end of the day, you have to look at the overall operations of the board, and this board is doing extremely well." Al Bailey, Chair Halton Catholic District School Board What's coming in February "The director is responsible for the overall operations of the board," he said. "The subjects, the curriculum and everything that the ministry brings to us, he (director) has to take to the superintendents, the superintendents have to take that to the principals and everybody else and that's how the system operates." Filing an annual report concerning what the board wants to achieve that year is another duty of the director. "We have to see that report and determine whether or not that meets the goals and objectives that the board has and he as a director has," said Bailey. "If it does, then everything is working smooth and we'll approve it. If it doesn't, we can give him guidelines on how to improve it to get things back on track." Although the process for judging the director's performance is being reviewed, Bailey says there is no lack of confidence in the board's current director, Lou Piovesan. "At the end of the day, you have to look at the overall operations of the board, and this board is doing extremely well," said Bailey. Things got a little heated during one stage of the meeting with some trustees calling for discussion on their long term strategic plan for the board's goals and direction, however because this was not on the evening's agenda, Bailey would not allow it. At one point Bailey gaveled down Burlington Trustee Bob Van de Vrande for pursuing the matter. "It will come back at another meeting, but they have to understand that we have rules that we put in place for operating meetings," said Bailey. "You can't just randomly go nillywilly out there and do whatever you want." Van de Vrande said the slight altercation was just about getting to discussion on the strategic plan as quickly as possible. "Everyone wants to do it so now it will be on the agenda," he said.
