www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday February 3, 2007 - 27 Shuffle off to Buffalo and take a shuttle to get there I t isn't a secret anymore that air prices out of Buffalo can be a fraction of what we overtaxed Canadians pay for a ticket in Canada. Pearson International Airport has the highest landing fees in the world, and that is reflected in the taxes on our air ticket. I found a fabulous price to San Francisco through my favourite travel agent, but spent some time thinking about driving to Buffalo in January, or even July for that matter. How long does it take? What about the delay at the border? How much time do I need to leave to get lost? And then one of my colleagues in the industry said, "Did you know there is a brand new shuttle service to the Buffalo Airport?" Well, no I didn't, and you probably don't either. Jetways Shuttle Service, www.jetways.ca, or 519-7568572. Beverly Scott, the president says, "Our company has integrated heart and soul into its vision and has a message of hospitality to communicate to our customers." For me, it was comforting to know that Beverly has a long history in the industry. She has a college diploma in Travel and Tourism, experience in managing a travel agency, experience with an international airline and tour operator, and most recently was a director for a motor coach tour operator. Why am I telling you all this? Simply because many people love the travel indus- try, come up with an idea they think will work, without any real knowledge of the business. They don't last long; this is a tricky industry. Beverly's 20 years of experience is impressive and perfect for Jetways to be successful. It is not easy running a shuttle service, even though it doesn't sound complicated. Joining her as Operations Director is Fred Cormier, also with vast experience in the travel industry, including coach tour experience. Here is how it works. You pick up the Shuttle at the Burlington Holiday Inn. If you stay the night before, a room costs between $109- $124, a significant savings to their regular rate. If you present your Jetways boarding pass, you can leave your car in their parking lot while you travel. You should check this in advance. If you aren't staying, get a loved one to drop you off at the front door. This is a great hotel, very nice pool, and the food is excellent. I've spent a lot of time there either eating or swimming over the years -- 3063 South Service Rd. just two minutes off the QEW. Visit www.holidayinn.com/burlington or call 905-639-4443. The shuttle costs $38 for up to 59-year-olds, $35 for the 60-plus gang, and students 18-24. Children up to 17 cost $20, and the group rate is $33 one way plus GST. There are eight trips each way per day. We tried it out last week. We booked the reservation on line, got on-line confirmations, booked the Holiday Inn. The shuttle was early and waiting for us, and the coach was a Great Canadian coach, again a company with a great reputation for safe coaches. It was pure luxury to be able to chat all the way down, go smoothly through American Immigration and be dropped off at the departure doors. We heard on the way home that Buffalo and the Niagara Area had been hit hard by a storm. We were the last flight out of Detroit before they shut the airport down. I'd have panicked at the idea of driving my little car through that kind of weather. I didn't have to fret this time, our shuttle was waiting for us, ready to drive us back to the car. I'll be using them again; driving to Buffalo was the only thing that has kept me from taking advantage of the great air prices. Ask your travel agent to book it for you. -- Sam Ion can be reached at sion10@cogeco.ca.
