Vol. 48 No. 16 "USING COMMUNICATION TO BUILD BETTER COMMUNITIES" Maverick Halton MP Garth Turner is seeing red -- and so are his critics. After being turfed from the Conservative party and most recently representing his constituents as an independent MP, Turner has now found a new home as a Liberal. In a press release issued late Tuesday coinciding with an Ottawa press conference with Liberal leader Stephane Dion, Turner said "After listening to voters for the past four months, since leaving Stephen Harper's Conservatives, I have no question that this is the right move. "It will help make me even more effective in Parliament, give Halton more prominence, and yet allow me to speak directly and continue to champion the causes people here want," he continued. "As a former Progressive Conservative MP and cabinet minister, I believe in being careful on money issues, but also generous on social ones," said Turner. Monday started like any other morning for the Lahey family. Anne and her three-year-old son, Carter, were getting ready to leave for work and day care. It was 7 a.m. The hot chocolate and coffee were ready, and as the family mini-van warmed up in their Pinery Crescent driveway, Carter was helped into his snowsuit. After she buckled her young son into his car seat, Anne walked back to the front stoop to pick up some bags to load into the car. When she turned around, "The guy just her three-year- dropped from the old was being sky. He literally driven away. just got dropped Their van, off from another stolen. "Literally, it car." all happened in a matter of 10 Derrick Lahey seconds. It couldn't have been more than 10 seconds," said Derrick Lahey, Parker's father, who recovered his unharmed son minutes later. "The guy just dropped from the sky. He literally just got dropped off from another car." All of this was captured on a neighbour's video surveillance system. Initially, Anne thought the reversing van had slipped into gear. "Only when the van stops and starts gaining speed does she see there's a guy in the front seat with his hood up," said Derrick.
