Canaris, during Saturday's Bur Bear high school hockey tournament Purple Pool final in Burlington. Bishop Tonnos defeated the Trailblazers 4-1; see page 43 for the story. Call it an Oakville Blades goal, with an assist to the Georgetown Raiders. The Blades secured a second-place finish in the Provincial Jr. A Hockey League West Conference standings when the Raiders handed the Hamilton Red Wings an 8-1 loss Monday night. That left Oakville and Hamilton deadlocked with 78 points (three behind first-place Brampton), with the Blades earning second because they had one more win than the Red Wings. Of course, Oakville wouldn't have been in position to finish second had it not beaten Hamilton 5-1 at home Friday night. The Blades followed that with an 80 shutout of Bramalea Saturday. "We were the only ones responsible for the position we were in, so it was a case of going out and doing what we had to do," said Blades coach and general manager Don Edwards. The Blades' second-place finish will pit them against the Mississauga Chargers in the opening round of the playoffs. The series will open Friday at Dominion Twin Rinks at 7:30 p.m. The next two games, Saturday and Monday, will be at the Port Credit Arena in Mississauga. Both are 8 p.m. starts. The series returns to Oakville for Game 4 Wednesday, Feb. 14 at 7:30 p.m. While the Blades won all five meetings with the Chargers this season -- all by at least three goals -- Edwards is not taking anything for granted. "We're just going to take it one shift, one period, one game at a time," Edwards said. "We want to keep up the work ethic that we've had in the last couple games and not look too far ahead." It would be hard not to, considering Mississauga finished 47 points behind the Blades, scored 90 fewer goals and allowed 147 more. If nothing else, it should give Oakville and its new additions some more time to play together and jell as a unit. "There's always an adjustment. We have 17 new bodies in the lineup," Edwards said. "It hasn't been one steady lineup all year. We haven't had our 23 players that we could say, `This is our ideal lineup.'" That ideal lineup would include defenceman Cody Goloubef, who has been out of the lineup since October. Edwards said Goloubef "is a lot closer to suiting up." Chase Langeraap scored twice in the win over Hamilton while Jamie Vanderveeken, Daniel Calitri and Fraser Smith added singles. Against Bramalea, Nick McParland had a hat trick, Vince Scott scored twice and Trevor Eckenswiller, Brant Clarke and Langeraap each had one. Kori Coelho made 16 saves for his second shutout of the season.
