www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday February 7, 2007 - 43 Trailblazers reach Purple final Ridge, Abbey Park dedicating game to accident victims Despite being undermanned, the Iroquois Ridge Trailblazers continued their solid boys' hockey season last weekend by reaching the Purple Pool final at the Bur Bear Hockey Tournament in Burlington. Playing with just 12 skaters due to injuries and work commitments, Iroquois Ridge fell 41 to Bishop Tonnos in Saturday's Purple final. Scott Johnston had the lone goal for Iroquois Ridge, which was without key players Jake Truant and Pat Readshaw. Trailblazers offensive leader Marcus Pride had ensured his team a spot in the final with a hat trick in a 3-2 semifinal victory over Essex. Pride also scored twice in a 3-1 win over Algoma in the quarter-finals. Nancy Anstett, who coaches the team with Peter Blake, said the team relies on its speed and team play for its success. Iroquois Ridge is currently 8-4 and tied for third place -- three points out of first -- in the Volpe Division. This afternoon, Iroquois Ridge will play the Abbey Park Eagles, the team which shares third. The teams will wear stars on their sweaters, in honour of the five hockey players from Meaford who were killed in a car accident recently. Students attending the game (3:20 p.m., Glen Abbey Recreation Centre) will wear green and gold ribbons, the colours of Georgian Bay Secondary School, where the five players went to school. Anstett said Ridge dealt with a similar tragedy when student Jamie Kyes was killed in a motorcycle accident. The school annually presents a memorial award in his honour, recognizing a student that displays dedication and leadership. "(The players) know the effect it would have on a small town and they wanted to do something about it," Anstett said. The two schools are collecting donations from staff, students and the community all week with the proceeds going to Georgian Bay Secondary School for the creation of an award in memory of the five students. -- Herb Garbutt, staff 2007 Oakville Minor Baseball Registration A complete Baseball Program for all Boys & Girls Born 1982 - 2002 We offer 3 Levels of Competition: House League and Select Program: Complete uniforms T-Ball through Junior Season Starts May - Championship weekend August Special Development Clinics to improve player's skills Toronto Blue Jays Instructional Clinic host Individual & Team Photos Family Discounts (for 3 or more members) Coaching & Umpire Clinics taught by qualified instructors Baseball Ontario Certified Umpires at all divisions Rep and Tier II Rep: Teams representing the Town of Oakville playing in the Central Ontario Provincial and possible International Tournaments.
