www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday February 10, 2007 - 19 Volunteer recruitment Help sought for canvassing Volunteers are being sought to do door-to-door canvassing for the Canadian Cancer Society, Oakville Unit during Daffodil Days this April. The Canadian Cancer Society is looking for people in Oakville to use their cancer-fighting powers by giving just three hours of time selling daffodils or canvassing door to door for its fundraising drive, Daffodil Month, held annually in April. The money raised helps fund leading-edge cancer research and support services for people living with cancer. "You don't need superhuman powers to help us fight cancer this April," says Lisa Moffatt, Fundraising Coordinator at the Oakville Unit. "Everyone has the power to fight cancer by sparing just three hours of their time selling daffodils or canvassing door to door. We need the support of thousands of volunteers to help us raise money for lifesaving research and vital support services that help people living with cancer in communities across Ontario." Since the Daffodil campaign began 50 years ago, more Canadians are surviving cancer, thanks to the hard work of volunteers and research funded by the Canadian Cancer Society. In 2006: · Oakville raised over $223,000 during Daffodil Month (Daffodil Days & Residential Canvass Campaign combined). · 58 dedicated Oakville Unit volunteer drivers helped 193 Oakville residents get to and from their cancer treatments culminating in 2625 trips to 14 area hospitals. · The Canadian Cancer Society Ontario Division supported 125 research projects in 2006, 45 that were new grants. "I put my cancer-fighting powers to use every April by knocking on doors in my neighbourhood to collect donations for the Society," says Lori Williams, Residential Canvass Campaign Chair. "Volunteering feels good because you know you're bringing hope to people in your community living with cancer. It's just three hours for you, but it could mean a lifetime to a cancer survivor." Openings exist for cashiers and potential buyers as well as people with experience in customer service, marketing and display work. Retail experience would be an asset, but is not essential. The Treasure Cove Gift Shop is located in the Main Lobby of OTMH and is operated by the Auxiliary. Finding out about heart failure Members of the public are invited to attend a free seminar entitled Heart Failure Awareness: What You Should Know on Tuesday, Feb. 13. It's at 7 p.m. at the Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) Auditorium. Dr. Donald Peat, a cardiologist and Nancy Dahmer, R.N. of the Heart Function Clinic at Halton Healthcare Services, will be presenting. Participants will receive information to assist in recognizing heart failure, its symptoms and causes, tests, diagnosis and treatment. Since heart disease and stroke are Canada's leading cause of death in women and men, it's important to understand how to take steps to lessen the chances of these serious illnesses and what to do when diagnosed. Congestive heart failure (CHF), or heart failure, is a condition in which the heart can't pump enough blood to the body's other organs. This can result from a number of things; coronary heart disease, scar tissue from past heart attacks (myocardial infarction), high blood pressure, heart valve disease, congenital heart defects, disease of the heart muscle (cardiomyopathy), and infection of the valves or heart muscle. If CHF should occur, the `failing' heart keeps working, but not as efficiently. The most common signs for congestive heart failure are swollen legs or ankles or difficulty breathing. Another symptom is weight gain when fluid builds up. People with heart failure can't exert themselves as they become short of breath and tired. If diagnosed, this condition can be managed; by a treatment program of rest, proper diet, modified activities, medications and sometimes surgery. Displays and refreshments will be available from 6:30 p.m. and the seminar will commence at 7 p.m. To register call 905-338-4379 or e-mail elittle@haltonhealthcare.on.ca.
