34 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday February 14, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Plyley, Cummings lead U of T to more provincial swim titles Oakville's Kate Plyley and Cam Cummings combined to win seven gold medals as the University of Toronto Blues continued their provincial swimming dynasty last weekend. Plyley won four golds and two silvers as U of T won its seventh consecutive Ontario University Athletics women's title Sunday in Guelph. Cummings captured three golds and three silvers as the men's team won its sixth OUA title in the past seven years. "I was really pleased with how I did and that the team won," said Plyley, a fourth-year ethics, society and law major. "Our goal was definitely to go in and win it." Plyley settled for a silver in the 400m freestyle at last year's OUA championships after being overtaken in the final 50m. This year there was no catching her as she won the event in a time of four minutes, 21.29 seconds. The 21-year-old would add another gold medal in the 800m freestyle, leading the final wire-to-wire with a personal best time of 8:58.23, giving her a six-second victory over teammate Nathalie Lacoste. In individual competition, Plyley also earned silver medals in the 200m and 400m individual medley. As a part of the Blues' freestyle relay teams, she helped U of T break two Ontario university records. The anchor on the 4x200m team, Plyley brought home an OUA record time of 8:21.58, breaking the Blues' eight-year-old record by three and a half seconds. Plyley was also a member of the 4x100m that won in a record time of 3:50.94. "The goal is to hit the podium at CIS," the Q.E. Park grad said of the March 2224 Canadian university championships in Halifax. "Last year we were second in both freestyle relays." The U of T women's team was ranked fifth in Canada heading into the OUA championships while the men's team was fourth. Cummings earned a gold medal in the 400m individual medley, taking the lead on the opening length of the pool and never surrendering it to post a winning time of 4:32.89. Cummings, who won a national medley championship with the Oakville Aquatic Club last summer, added two more golds as members of the 4x50m and 4x100m medley relay teams. Cummings also collected three silvers in the individual events, the 200m medley and the 100m and 200m backstroke. A third Oakville swimmer also struck gold at the OUA championships. Dave Landry helped the McMaster University win the men's 4x50m freestyle relay team and added a bronze in the 4x100m freestyle relay. -- Herb Garbutt, staff GOLDEN SMILES: Scott MacHattie (left) shows his excitement after winning two gold and a bronze at the Special Olympics Provincial Winter Games, held recently in Owen Sound. Pictured with MacHattie is Oakville Speed Skating Club race coach Matthew O'Donnell. Gold for speedskater MacHattie Oakville Speed Skating Club member Scott MacHattie was golden at the recent Special Olympics Provincial Winter Games in Owen Sound, earning a pair of gold medals and adding a bronze. MacHattie won the medals despite being the youngest competitor at the event, skating to personal-best times in every race. The club also sent 64 competitors to a recent two-day ability meet in Brampton, by far the largest representation of any participating club in Ontario. Ryan McAnuff and Jaroslaw Dubicki each claimed gold medals in their divisions, while Julian Aubert, Adam Craig, Devika Jain, Matthew O'Donnell and Sheryl Sullivan each earned silver medals. Zachary Lin and Graeme Stewart teamed to place first in senior relay, continuing the Oakville Speed Skating Club's tradition of success in relay events. Adding fourth-place finishes at the ability meet were Robert Lowery, Christopher Gemmell and Joshua Sullivan. Andrew Craig, Erin Heidecker, Paige Buchanan, Quinn MacHattie, Will Malcolm and Samuel Chin-Cheong all finished fifth in their divisions. The club's "sub-club", comprised of skaters who have broken the one-minute mark in the 500-metre distance, grew in Brampton as Blake Sullivan, Mathieu Masaro, Dubicki and ChinCheong all managed the feat. The club will send more than 30 skaters to the provincials next month in Ottawa, with ChinCheong and Stewart the latest to qualify. Colin Skov, Cassandra Boychuk, Craig and Gemmell have qualified for the next Ontario Cup meet, which is a stepping stone towards provincials.
