www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday February 14, 2007 - 5 Flynn said ruling made under old Tory OMB rules Continued from page 4 applications to move the heritage buildings in April 2006 and headed to the OMB. Also located on the Bronte Quadrangle is the heritage Stoneboats Restaurant, which suffered a fire last March and just re-opened for business last weekend. The Police Station is another heritage building that sits on Town-owned land on the other side of the proposed development. It's proposed the Post Office -- already relocated once from a more northerly site on Bronte Road to the quadrangle, would be relocated to Marine Drive near the home of the late Bill Hill's grandson John MacCharles. Glendella, which has sat for years overlooking the harbour from Ontario Street, is to be moved to a location to the north of the quadrangle site. Glendella, once the Ned Thompson Hotel, later was the home of Hill and his family. Hill operated Lakeside Marketeria. Participants in the hearing were the Bronte Historical Society and Bronte Village Residents Association (BVRA). The Bronte Historical Society presented to the OMB a statement that read, "The Bronte Historical Society is concerned that history and heritage are being marginalized and disrespected in the proposed plan for developing the quadrangle lands." "It's another nail in the coffin for any attempt to preserve our heritage," said BVRA president Brian Miller. Miller said the OMB couldn't find a heritage expert and wouldn't wait for one. "They didn't have the proper people there to do an analysis," said Miller who noted the decision's preamble indicated that because the Town hadn't marked the heritage nature of the buildings, it was okay to move them. Miller said a difficulty arises when a heritage building is in private ownership and said the comments were "unfair." Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn called the OMB decision instructive and alarming. "I think it shows just how badly the recently proclaimed reforms to the OMB were needed as this hearing was conducted under the old Tory rules. Secondly, it details, in a number of ways, how unprepared the current Town and Regional Official Plans are to truly represent the wishes of either Bronte residents or Oakville Council," said Flynn. Flynn said that as a Town councillor he advocated to have the property's zoning and Official Plan brought into conformity. "I understand and respect the ruling that the Old Post Office could be moved to another site as I was intimately involved in the building's first move and agree the current site has no historical context. I am truly baffled by the decision to allow Glendella to be moved. The former stagecoach inn was built to face Lake Ontario for very good reasons," said Flynn. Flynn said he's glad both buildings will at least be saved and restored. "I'm very glad future appeals to the OMB will be under the new reforms we recently introduced, which bestows much more power on municipalities like Oakville. It clearly underscores that all the OMB reform in the world will not take the place of solid, citizen involved, community planning." Flynn said, "The OMB under any government was never designed as a body councils could hide behind the skirts of when it came to difficult planning decisions." He added, "I'm confident the new mayor and most of the coun- cil are up to the task of clearly defining a vision for Oakville that will be much more defensible and should not even reach the Ontario Municipal Board."
