The Beaver has been named a finalist in numerous categories in the OCNA's annual Better Newspapers Competition 2006. First, second and third place will be announced at a March 31 awards gala to be held at the Sheraton-on- Reg Vertolli the-Falls in Niagara Falls. General Excellence Awards recognize overall achievement by circulation class in editorial, advertising and layout. The Beaver will compete with its sister newspaper Krissie Rutherford The Burlington Post in the category. Both newspapers are headed by Halton Media Division Editor In Chief Jill Davis and publisher Neil Oliver. Oakville Beaver reporter Krissie Rutherford is among the top three to vie for Best News Series for a series of stories she wrote on T.A. Blakelock graduate and Canadian Armed Forces Corporal Charlie Long. Rutherford interviewed Long via the Internet while he was serving in Khandahar, Afghanistan; Long's father, Doug Old man winter is making up for lost time. A heavy winter storm buried Oakville Tuesday night with blowing snow and icy winds reducing visibility and slicking roads for evening commuters.
