Storm left significant snowfall RIZIERO VERTOLLI / OAKVILLE BEAVER Continued from page 1 School Board cancelled buses and classes on Wednesday as snow squalls off Lake Ontario combined with a winter storm front from the south to give Oakville its biggest snow storm for 2007 so far. Many adults also took a snow day as offices and streets, normally choked with weekday activity, were empty of all but a few diehard employees and drivers Wednesday morning. Those who chose to go to work faced knee high snowdrifts and half-buried cars as the snow continued to fall, finally ending around noon with the sun actually breaking through the clouds. Throughout Wednesday snowplows worked to clear roads and sidewalks in an effort to start the snow-clogged town up again. "We were spared a little bit. It was a lot worse in the Hamilton area," said Dan Cozzi, director of Oakville's Road and Works Department. Hamilton received 70cm of snow. "Nonetheless it was significant," he said. "As of (Wednesday) morning at about 10 a.m. we had completed plowing of all the main and secondary roads and at about 11 o'clock we moved on to residential neighbourhoods. It can take us up to 24 hours to complete that task." Sidewalks along Oakville's major routes and commercial areas were also in the process of being plowed Wednesday afternoon with Cozzi saying he hoped to plow residential sidewalks Wednesday evening or sometime Thursday. "We deliver our service based on road priority so your busier roads like Speers Road, Upper Middle Road they get done first," said Cozzi. The entire Oakville snow clearance fleet of over 80 vehicles was brought to bear in cleaning up storm. "We put everything we had on it," said Cozzi. "All our sidewalk plows, all our contracted equipment and all our own equipment is out there." Despite the slick conditions of the town's roads during the storm, police are reporting relatively few accidents. "People were well aware the storm was coming so we had maybe 10 accidents,"said Staff Sgt. Gavin Hayes. "Nothing serious at all." & Make Your Home Comfort More Affordable LENNOX SALE CENTRAL AIR & FURNACE ® Up to $ 1000 Rebate *OAC * Instant 10 Years Parts & Labour Warranty * NO PAYMENT!
