26 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday February 21, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Schools have safe school action teams Continued from page 10 Piovesan said his school board is doing its part to raise awareness of and prevent cyber-bullying. "We will be doing presentations to parents about this," he said. "We've even established at each school a `safe school action team' that looks at their individual school, looks at concerns and makes recommendations as to how to address those things." Piovesan says his school board is also fighting cyber-bul- lying by stripping potential bullies of their tools. "We don't allow cell phones to be used in the schools. We don't ban students from carrying them to school, but they have to deactivate them," he said. Besides filming bullying incidents, Piovesan says, cyber-bullies also use cell phones to send harassing text messages making the suspension of their use in school paramount. Video surveillance is another technique Piovesan's school board is using to keep students safe. "In our elementary schools we are installing security cameras at the front entrance of each one of our schools but it's going to take us several months," he said. "We started it as a pilot project in six schools in the fall and it seems to be a positive influence." The Halton District School Board has also made it a policy to ban cell phone use in its schools but, as Joudrie explains, ever changing technology presents new avenues for cyber-bullying. "You could explicitly ban something like cell phones only to have students who are using a PDA, an MP3 or an iPod. With the convergence of technology an item does three or four things," he said. Like the Catholic school board, Joudrie is working with police to raise awareness of the problem, recently inviting mem- bers of the police services to a principal's meeting in order to familiarize the educators with the concept of cyber-bullying and fight clubs. This also gave the principals the opportunity to provide police with any information they may have had. "We have two options," said Joudrie. "We can ignore it and watch it grow or we can deal with it in a very public and expressed way. The approach we've chosen is to deal with it straight up." Tips to avoid getting burned this winter break As families flock to the beach during the mid-winter school break, it's important to make the most of your vacation by using a little common sense to protect you The Studio Spa is the Best Va in Oakville Facial: all skin typ Including Wrinkles Rosacea Acne and your family. 1. Pack a hat. If you're planning to be out especially between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., peak sun hours, wearing a brimmed hat makes sense. Any adult or child who gets their hair styled in the popular corn rows or braids offered by many resorts should be particularly mindful of wearing a hat to protect their scalp from burning. 2. Sunglasses. Whether you're on the water, the beach or the road, sun in the south can be very intense. Protect your eyes from the sun's ultraviolet radiation (UV) with a pair of sunglasses. 3. Sunscreen. Pick a sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays, both of which are harmful, with a high sun protection factor (SPF). 4. Read the fine print. Before booking your holiday, or while checking out daily excursions during your vacation, be sure to check the details involving any extra costs you might be incurring. If you have any doubts or questions, check with your tour operator's on-site representative. After all, no one likes getting burned on a family vacation. - News Canada FREE WDy BLOith anRY *New Clien Financing A vailable 0.A.C. 171 SPEERS RD. #19, OAKVILLE w ice colour serv ly ts On Colour Correction, Hair Extensions & Japanese Hair Straightening Manicure: Elegant Classic style Pedicure: Soft as Silk You will be delighted with the results 518 POSTRIDGE DRIVE 905.257.7427 www.colouraddiction.com OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK Mon., Tues., Thurs., Fri. 9:30-9:00pm, Wed. 9:30-6:00pm, Sat. 9:00-5:00, Sun. 12:00-5:00pm EYELASH EXTENTIONS AVAILABLE! www.hairchateau.com (check website for new client discount) 905 338-1237 *Complete Package* 65 ave $ S $ B Before After only 00 www.betterbodytoning.com 60 The ideal treatment for immediate inch loss & toning (non-surgical & without needles) An electronic muscle stimulator works your muscles for fast, safe, immediate and sustainable inch loss.
