www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday February 23, 2007 - 29 Number crunching at Eastview data fair By Alex Jacobs and Kendra Lange, Grade 7, Eastview Public School On Feb. 20 and for the first time ever, Eastview's Grade 7 students participated in a Mini-Data Fair. The fair was a culmination of the study of data management in mathematics classes. Students from both the English and French Immersion programs studied questions ranging from "How many Skittles are there in one pack?" to "What are causes of cancer? How does that affect the death toll in Canada?" Following the development of our topic we then had to answer questions using both primary and secondary sources. An example of a primary source was when students went around the school and asked people what their favorite brand name of clothing was. A secondary source is when students researched their topic using the Internet or other areas of information. We had about three weeks to answer our questions. During the three weeks we scrambled to find information and everyone was running around hastily trying to pull projects together. We obtained pictures, calculated statistics, drew diagrams, graphs and charts. We calculated means, modes and medians. We investigated ranges, sample sizes, used pie charts, bar graphs and area charts to display data. We sampled, surveyed, made predictions and investigated probability. We also commented on the factors that limited our data and affected the accuracy of our calculations. We reported on our analysis of the data in paragraphs. Teachers asked us to write at least four paragraphs on our hypotheses, our conclusion (two paragraphs) and our summary. The paragraphs and graphs had to support answers to our question. All of the information was packaged in an organized display. Some students placed their information on display boards while others used PowerPoint. The displays were colourful, organized and packed full of information. Finally the three weeks were over and it was time to share our numbers, graphs, charts and conclusions. Judges visited the six classrooms to evaluate the displays based on a rubric that assessed both content and presentation. Judges and visitors were encouraged to ask us questions: What is the theme of your project and why did you choose this particular topic? What population and sample group did you use? Did you use primary or secondary sources or both? What are the central tendencies? Explain your calculations? What conclusions did you come up with for your research? Can you make any predictions about your research? Everyone who viewed the displays commented positively on the accuracy of the calculations, the quality of the data, and the mathematical techniques used. The judges will be discussing their evaluations to select six French and six English students to participate in the Halton/Peel Regional Data Fair being held on March 2 at Sheridan College. We would like to thank our math teachers, Mme. Wright-Pettersen, Mr. Magill and Mrs. Livingston-Jeffrey who helped us prepare and made sure everything was complete. Even though this was a lot of work it was also a lot of fun. Solid Wood Bedroom Sale ANNUAL BEDROOM EVENT HELD OVER THIS WEEKEND ONLY! plus GREAT SAVINGS!
