A newly-passed, town-wide bylaw to control residential use of cosmetic, carcinogenic pesticides -- that takes effect Jan. 1, 2008 -- is one of the best gifts members of the Oakville Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society could ask for in marking its 50th anniversary. However the donation of a laptop computer, courtesy of Oakville-based MDG, a manufacturer and retailer of televisions and computers, was certainly an unexpected surprise. The bylaw was an early gift, passed by Town of Oakville council Feb. 12. The computer was hand delivered to the Unit's Fourth Line headquarters Saturday, during its official anniversary open house. Although cancer is still omnipresent, there is room to cheer the last half century for exponential progress on the research, service and prevention fronts.
