www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday February 28, 2007 - 27 Blades, Wings split opening pair The Oakville Blades and Hamilton Red Wings entered last night's action deadlocked 1-1 in their best-of-seven Provincial Junior A Hockey League playoff series, following the Red Wings' 6-1 win in Hamilton Monday. Game 3 of the series was contested last night at Dominion Twin Rinks, a game that began after the Beaver's press deadline. Game 4 is slated for 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at Hamilton's Dave Andreychuk Mountain Arena. The Blades had an opportunity to jump out to a 2-0 series lead on the Wings Monday, but surrendered four unanswered third-period goals in the one-sided loss. Oakville resident Mike Galbraith sparked Hamilton with a pair of goals, giving him eight in six playoff games thus far, while Frankie Grandits, Wes Consorti, Zac Rinaldo and Steve Mullin added singles for the victors. Chase Langeraap countered with a powerplay marker for the Blades. Oakville's poor showing in the third period Monday was in direct contrast to its play in the final frame of Friday's series opener at Dominion Twin Rinks. Cody Goloubef and Trevor Eckenswiller scored in the third period as the Blades overcame a 2-1 deficit to down Hamilton 3-2. Daniel Borges had the other Blades' tally, while Anthony Pototschnik earned a pair of assists. Matt Hoyle stopped 24 of 26 shots to earn the win in goal. Game 5 of the series will be played Saturday at Dominion Twin Rinks, again a 7:30 p.m. start. Hornets host girls' hockey tourney The Oakville tyke Red Rockets and bantam Navy Seals were the two local squads to win division championships at the Oakville Hornets Girls Hockey Association's annual tournament, held last weekend at rinks throughout the town. The novice Teal Attack and midget Gang Green also reached championship games, but both were blanked in their gold-medal contests. Photos and more details from the tournament will appear in an upcoming edition of The Oakville Beaver. OMBA registration at Oakville Place The first registration session for the upcoming Oakville Minor Baseball Association season will take place this weekend at Oakville Place. The OMBA offers baseball for players aged 5-25, including squads in house league, select and rep competition. T-ball play begins at age 5, a change that was implemented last season and has proven to be a big hit. The house league program is designed for players of all abilities, according to house league vice-president Peter Karrys, with the goal being to provide a fun, safe environment in which the kids can learn and develop their skills. Select teams are formed in each house league division for players who wish to play additional baseball on top of their house league schedule. OMBA rep teams compete throughout Ontario and often even in the United States. The teams have been formed since last fall and have been working on indoor conditioning at Frozen Ropes the past two months. Rep clubs compete throughout Ontario and in the United States, said rep vice-president Nevil Corbeth. In addition to its league play, the OMBA will once again partner with the Toronto Blue Jays this season to host the OMBA's third annual Toronto Blue Jays Instructional Clinic. This weekend's registration is set for Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the lower level of Oakville Place (near Sears).
