It's a warm place where everyone is welcome. If you're very fortunate, you'll meet Tracey Zottarelli, a Y member and volunteer whose smile lights up every room she enters. Tracey was born with hydrocephaly, an abnormal buildup of cerebrospinal fluid, which can cause brain damage. When she was just five months old, doctors removed a tumour from Tracey's brain. In all, she has endured 24 surgeries. Her mother, Mary Burke, explains: "Tracey spent her first three years in hospital in a semiconscious state being tube-fed. She never saw the outside world until we took her home. She weighed only 17 pounds. At that time, one doctor told us that Tracey would never walk, talk or be toilet trained. He suggested we put her in a wheelchair and institutionalize her." But Mary was determined that her daughter would come home and live a happy, productive life. Tracey's neurosurgeon, Dr. Harold Hoffman at Sick Kids Hospital, agreed. "She's a fighter," he said. And so is Mary. Now age 38, Tracey works out at the YMCA of Oakville's Wellness Centre twice a week for an hour a time, and volunteers at such children's programs as GymKidz and Wiggles and Giggles. "I love to play with the kids," says Tracey, whose calm manner makes her a favourite among the toddler set. In Mary's eyes, Tracey's life has been a gift. And the people at the Y who are touched by Tracey's warm enthusiasm and gentle demeanour would agree she is a gift to the world. When you donate to the Strong Kids campaign at the YMCA of Oakville, you're helping people like Tracey and her mom, who benefit from the Y's fee-assistance program, which is funded by Strong Kids.
