www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday March 3, 2007 - 9 Entries open for anti-drinking and driving contest The Mayor's Special Committee Against Impaired Driving (SCAID) is once again sponsoring its annual essay contest in memory of Janet Dooley who was killed by a drunk driver in 1991. Open to all Oakville students, the topic is Why No One Should Drink and Drive. Students in all award categories are invited to submit an essay of no more than 250 words, before March 30, 2007. This year, Mayor Rob Burton will personally provide a cash prize in a new, third award category. "The SCAID essay contest is a great way to encourage students to think about the realities of drinking and driving, and take action against it," said Burton. "I'm very pleased to be able to sponsor a new third award category, which I hope will encourage even more young people to participate." The new award categories based on student grade are: · Junior (Grade 8 and under): students can win a bicycle, sponsored by the Halton/Brampton agents and staff of The Co-operators Insurance and Financial Services. · Intermediate (Grades 9 and 10): students can win a driver training gift certificate courtesy of Young Drivers of Canada Oakville. · Senior (Grades 11 and 12): students can win a cash prize of $250, sponsored by the mayor. Winners will be invited to read their essays at a televised meeting of Council. Members of Council, award sponsors, and Mrs. Dooley, mother of the late Janet Dooley, will present winners with their prizes. Essay submissions must be accompanied by a separate title page indicating the students' name, grade and school, as well as a consent form. For more information or to download the consent form, visit www.oakville.ca. This year the mayor has recorded a special message for students regarding the contest.
