www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday March 7, 2007 - 37 Blakelock earns spot in LINK drama competition T.A. Blakelock High School is one of 11 teams of high school drama students to compete in the Learning Innovative New Knowledge (LINK) 2007 Drama Competition. It's a youth outreach initiative of the Industrial Accident Prevention Association (IAPA) aimed at raising awareness about young worker health and safety. Each LINK 2007 Drama Competition team creates a 25-minute multi-media, original dramatic production featuring need-to-know messages about young worker health and safety. In 2005, Ontario's Workplace Safety and Insurance Board recorded more than 12,600 young workers, between the ages of 15 and 24, injured to the extent that they were unable to work for at least one day and an additional eight young people killed as a result of a work-related accident or injury. Health and safety issues these productions address include a worker's rights and responsibilities, injury prevention, workplace violence, and physical and mental health. Throughout the entire production development process, students have access to workplace health and safety professionals who share their knowledge and experience. Students are encouraged to incorporate elements of music, dance, poetry, audio visual aids, and even audience participation into the creation of their production. The finished product is then performed during school assemblies and judged by a panel of workplace health and safety professionals. Cash prizes will be awarded to the drama programs of competition finalists. LINK 2007 Drama Competition participants have until April 6 to perform their original production. The top five finishers will then be brought to Toronto to perform in a showcase of talent at the LINK 2007 Youth Health & Safety Forum on April 16 and 17.
