With only seconds remaining in regulation and the game tied, the Blades cleared their own zone and appeared headed to overtime. However, Oakville failed to get the puck deep and Hamilton quickly countered, as Red Wings forward Frankie Grandits fired a wrist shot past Blades netminder Matt Hoyle with 1.1 seconds remaining in the third period. The Blades, conference champions a year ago and with even bigger things in mind this season, had tied the game 2-2 with 3:06 to go in the third, as Paul Conter one-timed a point shot past Hamilton goaltender Cameron Talbot on a two-man advantage. Oakville was still on the powerplay following the equalizer and had several decent scoring chances, but wasn't able to capitalize on the man advantage -- something that was a major difference in the series. The Blades scored on six of their 47 powerplays in the series, including 1-for12 efforts in both Game 3 and Game 5, and their inability to cash in on a lengthy five-on-three advantage in the fifth game might have been the series' defining LIESA KORTMANN / OAKVILLE BEAVER COVERING UP: Hamilton Red Wings goaltender Cameron Talbot covers up the puck with Oakville Blades forward Bryan Peters (in blue) looking for a rebound Monday night in Hamilton.
