42 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday March 7, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Slow start doesn't faze Gators at George Bell select tournament Despite losing its first three games at the recent George Bell select hockey tournament, the Oakville Starbucks minor peewee red Gators still managed to win the championship. The Gators rebounded from the slow start to win their final two games, 3-0 over Weston in the semifinal and 5-0 over the host George Bell team in the championship contest, and capture their second tournament title of the month. Patrick McGinnis scored twice in the title game, with Sean McEvoy, Jesse Taylor and Reese Plantery also tallying. Curtis Kohler and George Proner had assists, with Sean Murray recording the shutout. Ryan McNamara, Ryan Shea and McGinnis had the Gators' goals in the semifinal. Tyler Cassidy led Oakville in overall scoring during the tournament, netting four goals and adding two assists. Mason Kuipers (four assists), Jeffrey Nye (goal, assist) and Eric Burzycki (two assists) also contributed offensively. Mitch Cowburn and Alex Dos Santos chipped in with strong two-way play. "In my 35 years of minor hockey, I have never seen a team do what these boys did - lose three in a row and come back to win the championship," said Gators coach Marshall Snowball. Several weeks earlier, the Gators won a tournament in Shelburne the conventional way, going undefeated in their three games. Oakville opened with a 4-2 win over Bradford Centre Ice, then posted overtime wins over Shelburne (3-2) and Woowlich (1-0) to earn gold. Taylor scored the game-winning goal in both the overtime contests, while Murray had the shutout in the gold-medal contest. "(The Red Wings) blocked an unbelievable number of shots," said Oakville head coach and general manager Don Edwards. "When we went to fire, they were committed as a team, and it comes down to those little things. They were a little more committed to the little things like blocking shots." Though he didn't go as far as to identify individuals, Edwards said he was disappointed in several of his veteran players throughout the series. The Blades took a number of undisciplined retaliatory penalties against the Red Wings and Hamilton made them pay, scoring two powerplay goals in the decisive game -- one coming on a two-minute, twoman advantage. "It's hard to watch when you're taking penalties that might be interpreted as stupid penalties. Shooting yourself in the foot is the last thing you want to do," Scott said. "In the heat of the moment, though, you make a lot of bad decisions. You have to put yourself in the position of the other guy." Monday's contest was the third in three nights between the teams, since the series schedule was altered by the post- ponement of games last week due to weather. Oakville tied the series 2-2 Saturday with a 4-3 double-overtime win, but the Red Wings bounced back to win 4-1 the next night in Oakville. With a large crop of players in their final year of junior eligibility, Edwards said he anticipates only seven or eight players returning next season. NOTES: Monday's game was delayed for approximately half an hour after Oakville forward Brent Clarke was checked heavily into the boards by Hamilton's Zach Rinaldo in the first period. Clarke lay motionless on the ice following the hit and was taken off on a stretcher. Edwards said Clarke suffered a concussion and underwent a CAT scan Monday night. Rinaldo received a major for charging and a game misconduct on the play... Anthony Pototschnik had the other Blades goal Monday. Chase Langeraap, Lindsay Sparks, Cody Goloubef and Fraser Smith earned assists... Brandon DeFazio was Oakville's overtime hero in Game 4, scoring at 17:17 of the second extra session. Trevor Elliott, Smith and Goloubef also tallied for the Blades... DeFazio notched the lone Oakville goal in Game 5... Local resident Mike Galbraith had four goals and five assists in the series for Hamilton.
