8- The Oakville Beaver, Friday March 9, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Oakville woman named director of Jane Goodall Institute of Canada Oakville's Jane Lawton is the new Executive Director of the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada. Lawton, a long-time admirer of Goodall's, says her new position is a dream come true. With a lifelong passion for animals and wildlife conservation, one of Lawton's earliest dreams was to study animals in the wild. Today she is making a direct contribution to the leading-edge wildlife research, conservation and education programs run by the Jane Goodall Institute in Africa and worldwide. Her first tasks as Executive Director have been to move the head office of the institute from Montreal to Toronto, and to establish a new partnership with the University of Toronto's Centre for the Environment. Lawton has carved out an impressive international career in the not-for-profit sector, having worked with Aga Khan Foundation Canada, Oxfam Hong Kong, and most recently the Nature Conservancy of Canada. Founded in 1977, the Jane Goodall Institute continues Dr. Goodall's pioneering research of chimpanzee behaviour research that transformed scientific perceptions of the relationship between humans and animals. Today, the Institute is a global leader in the effort to protect chimpanzees and their habitats. It also is widely recognized for establishing innovative community-centered conservation and development programs in Africa, and Roots & Shoots, a global environmental and humanitarian education program, which has groups in more than 96 countries. PELLIER Halton Women's Place is one of 50 shelters across the country to receive some of the $100,000 the CAW has donated in recognition of yesterday. The CAW has made ending violence against women a priority at the bargaining table, but understands that real change comes with a political commitment to progressive social policy. On International Women's Day, CAW members joined with thousands of women in communities across the country to reflect on gains, celebrate victories, assess challenges ahead and re-energize for the future.
