We live in a world where destruction and chaos magnifies itself through the populations. In Africa, the disease AIDS has infected so many people that it has become a pandemic that many believe will consume an entire generation. Last year, the disease claimed close to 3.3 million lives, and still, numbers of new infections are rising. Currently it is estimated by the United Nations that close to 39 million people are living with the disease. AIDS will be a part of our future and yet, North American eyes remain closed to the growing threat to Africa and the rest of the world. Key individuals in this world understand the importance of this growing threat, among them, Canada's own Stephen Lewis. Lewis is the former Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations and the former United Nations' Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa. He is the author of the book Race Against Time and founder and Chair of the Stephen Lewis Foundation. He is an acclaimed lecturer and advocate for Africa which has been the continent hardest hit by the pandemic. Lewis has spent the better part of his diplomatic life giving a passionate and eloquent voice to the millions of people affected. His goal is to raise global awareness of the pandemic's social, political, economic and environmental impacts on Africa. Also invited to attend this Conference are representatives from organizations such as Casey House, World Vision, Halton AIDS Network and one of the Stephen Lewis Foundation's local Grandmother's Groups. They are invited to conduct breakout sessions for interested student-delegates on various topics with respect to the pandemic. A lecture like this is not enough to send a message to the world. In order to heighten awareness of the issues surrounding HIV/AIDS not only in Africa but also in our local community, the Oakville high schools are seeking sponsorship from local businesses and the global corporations within our community that call Oakville home. Students have been engaged in a fundraising marathon, which has included penny drives, a Busker Fest, school dances, a fashion show and silent auction among other events. The Stephen Lewis Foundation disburses funds to the grassroots community projects in Africa that focus on improving the lives of those hardest hit by the pandemic. Interested donors may send a cheque payable to the Stephen Lewis Foundation to Iroquois Ridge High School, c/o Monique Gazan at 1123 Glenashton Drive, Oakville, ON L6H 5M1. If you are interested in attending Lewis' lecture, tickets are available for $15 on a first come first served basis from the above contact. Tax receipts will be issued by the Foundation. Don't close your eyes Oakville, our community can do so much more to make AIDS history, and this conference is an important start.
