The boating community converged March 7 at the Town Hall for the 6th annual Boating Symposium. Symposium is a fancy word for a public meeting and, in this case, trade show. The joys of boating are big business in Oakville and the harbours are the site of many a shenanigan when the ice clears, (shenanigan, in a good way) so maybe it makes sense to also elevate the language. This year is the town's 150th anniversary, and from the beginning the history of Oakville was closely tied to the harbours. The Oakville Harbours Advisory Committee did well to involve the two Historical Societies Oakville and Bronte - in the symposium. There was a thoughtful element to the proceedings as well as many practical ones. Local actor and playwright Michael Brown, in period costume as Oakville's illustrious founder, William Chisholm, greeted people at the door. It was a nice touch. While most boats won't launch until the first week of May many boaters were getting "Sixteen Mile Creek and the harbour have been my favourite playground. I've spent more time there than anywhere else in the world and I still look forward to going down there every day in the summer." Olympic Gold Medal paddler Larry Cain antsy and counting the weeks -- seven -- until splash down. Winter is kind of a long lunch, one fellow commented wryly. But getting onto the water is only one hurdle. Boating, as a recreation, is just as complicated as everything else in modern life. There are a host of things boaters need to know, and acquire, and comply with these days, in order to be safe, well-equipped and otherwise prepared for cruising, racing, paddling or motoring, or even just sitting at the dock sipping mineral water. The South Atrium exhibit hall was literally lined with helpful agencies among them the Canada Border Services, and the US Customs and Border Protection - plus clubs like The Oakville Club, and Trout Unlimited - and of course businesses including Northshore Boatworks and Mason's Chandlery, Clift's Marine Sales and McMichaelDavis Marine Insurance all to assist local boaters with any little thing, including Oakville's official 150th Anniversary paraphernalia, spiffy caps, jackets, golf balls and more. Former Olympic paddler Larry Cain was on hand as Master of Ceremonies. "Long before I started to paddle I knew that Oakville was a town developed because of the water. I was well aware of the history through the museum at Erchless and the Chisholm stories." Cain, now a teacher at St. Mildred's-Lightbourn School, said he first stumbled into the Canoe Club in 1974 when he was only 11-years-old. "Since that time, Sixteen Mile Creek and the harbour have been my favourite playground. I've spent more time there than anywhere else in the world and I still look forward to going down there every day in the summer." The two-time Olympic medalist (gold and silver) added, "Now I have an out-rigger boat that is made for the waves, so I can actually play out in the lake. For me, to be here tonight is not only a privilege but a fun thing to do."
