www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday March 16, 2007 - 7 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Real issue in Lakeshore Woods is property values I would like to come to the defence of Sheila Barry who made a comment (Oakville Beaver, March 7) about the type of property she is afraid of being built in Lakeshore Woods. The comment she made I believe referred to "some low-incomey sort of stuff" property proposals by the developer, not about any type of people. For sure, it can be said that "low-income sort of" housing may attract "lowincomey sort of" stereo-typical people, but it can equally attract students and the like who are working for the greater good of mankind. The issue letter-writer Ostap Dmytriw (Saddened by comment, Oakville Beaver, March 9) failed to realize is that the problem is the effect this sort of housing, regardless of who is going to live in it or what it is called, will have on the property prices of those surrounding it. It is this sort of SocialWorker rhetoric (if I may use the stereo-type) that creates a social scenario that doesn't exist, to play on the minds of people, who also fail to see the whole picture, and then fans the flames of that situation for their own benefaction. Many residents have spent years of labour to purchase an expensive home, in a quiet sub-division, only to see their properties, and to some their pension, jeopardized into negative equity because of poor planning decisions and avaricious developers. Put 100 units in close proximity to his front or back yard; introduce 200 vehicles into his single lane road without adequate access to major routes, introduce the problems of garbage collection, water run-off, and other overloads on his services, and he would no doubt feel the same. It has been identified in studies for years that lowcost housing devalues the property of adjacent homeowners, it's not about the people, its about the property, and its about needless environmental destruction just because the council will not rezone land slightly further north and blaming it, invalidly on the Provincial Rulings and going against their own goals and objectives laid down in the "Official Plan" for Oakville. Bravo Ostap, chalk up another fine belittling of a concerned and caring person. I hope you are proud of yourself. Congratulations for reading something into a statement that was definitely not there in the teller's words, and was never intended. I have actually taken the time to meet and speak at length with Mrs. Barry about the problems in Lakeshore Woods, and she has none of the attitudes you accuse her of. And Sheila-- keep up the good work, many of us appreciate what you are trying to achieve against what must seem at times insurmountable stupidity. LEN INKSTER Why not swap church site? I listened with concern recently as Daniels Corporation told us of their plans to cut down a large wooded area in our Lakeshore Woods neighbourhood in order to build apartments or stacked townhouses. What a shame that the town allows a builder to destroy a forest while only a minute's walk away vacant land waits, unused, because it is designated a future church site, if and when a parish decides to buy this land. Surely it is possible for the town to take the environment into consideration and modify the site plan so that the wooded area is designated land for future church use and let Daniels build on the vacant lot. Not only would this ease traffic and save the environment but one day it might give us a lovely church in the woods without destroying so much of the forest. Will the Town of Oakville come to its senses and stop this unnecessary and unwanted destruction of our environment? MARIA CATANIA Safe abortions save women's lives Continued from page 6 negated. Women's lives have been saved as a result of having access to safe abortions. For balance, why don't our local pro-choice organizations advertise? If the Pro-Life movement had its way, women would be baby machines; human incubators without any reproductive rights. Imagine how dysfunc- tional our country would be then. Pro-Life Halton's advertisement contains a photograph of a woman crying, as if proceeding with an unwanted pregnancy would have been a `better' option. It is 2007, and evidently, religious patriarchy is still alive and well, which is certainly reason enough for women to be crying. Nonetheless, our tears need to culminate into strength, to keep defending our reproductive rights, which continue to be threatened by theocratic, anachronistic movements. Reproductive rights are a very personal, individual matter. If someone is opposed to abortion, the solution is simple: Don't have one.
