If you are a poet, but didn't know it, or a budding scribe with a certain vibe, then this April will be a thrill By Krissie Rutherford OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF It's official: April is Poetry Month in Oakville. As Mayor Rob Burton states in his proclamation, the designation "recognizes and celebrates poetry and its vital place in the culture of the Town of Oakville." There's more than enough poetic events scheduled next month to prove it. "Those of us who participate in the eight active poetry groups in Oakville don't need to be told that Oakville is a hotbed of terrific poetry," says Poetry Oakville 2007 co-ordinator Elka Ruth Enola, "but the rest of Oakville needs to be informed." Enola and a group of volunteers have put together a jampacked program for the month of April to appeal to the tastes of poets and poetry admirers of all types. The events are all free, aside from the Poetry Café, which has a $5 charge. All are open on a firstcome, first-seated basis as well, other than workshops led by poet Ellen S. Jaffe and actor, director and teacher Yo Mustafa, which require registration and have limited attendance. CJ's Café in Bronte, 2416 Lakeshore Rd. W., is one of a number of venues hosting poetic events next month. "Obviously having been heavily involved in the Poetry Cafes and other poetry initiatives, it's only natural to get involved," said owner and long-time Oakville Arts Council member, CJ Martin. "That's what this café is for spotlighting local stuff." Some of the "local stuff" will be Martin's own she's launching her first published book of poetry, But Tonight, on April 1. "It's a collection of poems I've written over the last 20 years," said Martin, who added the book includes everything from modern and contemporary to older and formally structured poetry. The last section of six in But Tonight is an epic romance poem. Martin's other scheduled poetry month events include a presen- "Those of us who participate in the eight active poetry groups in oakville don't need to be told that Oakville is a hotbed of terrific poetry, but the rest of Oakville needs to be informed."
