Oakville councillors approved an increase in fees for various town permits and services at Tuesday night's Community Services Committee meeting, after a staff review suggested that some fees weren't covering the true cost of providing the service. It will now cost more to hold an event that requires a road closure, to put up a mobile or directional sign on a public roadway and to get a permit for a newspaper box. Road cutting permits for private servicing are also on the rise, as are the fees for temporarily placing mobile cranes or disposal bins on public property, and to get an encroachment agreement. Councillors did agree to waive the fee for road closures to accommodate street parties planned this spring as part of the town's 150th birthday celebration. A full list of the fees being increased is available on the town's website as part of the March 20 Community Services agenda. A final decision on the price hikes will be made at a meeting of the full town council on March 26.
