The grandmothers scrape food and money together to ensure their grandchildren eat and go to school. Stephen Lewis, chair of the Stephen Lewis Foundation and the former United Nations Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS, on March 7, International Women's Day, launched the foundation's grandmothers to grandmothers campaign to raise awareness and support in Canada. Lewis will speak Thursday, May 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Appleby College, 540 Lakeshore Rd. W. to highlight the impact grandmothers in Canada are having on African grandmothers and the orphans. The event is a fundraiser for grandmothers in sub-Saharan Africa and is organized by the Oomama (grandmothers helping grandmothers) group in Oakville. Oomama is one of 145 grandmother groups across Canada from British Columbia to Prince Edward Island. The Oakville fundraiser will also feature African music from Soul Influence, the sale of Lewis' book, Race Against Time, booths with African artifacts and a draw. Tickets are available for a suggested donation of $50. All proceeds will go to the Stephen Lewis Foundation. For tickets, call Kathy at 905-849-7075 or Donna at 1905-945-8915 or visit www.oomama.org.
