14 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday March 24, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Programs bring magic of books to kids Continued from page 11 development, signage, parent guides, and community workshops. The Book Play program is designed to give children in home-run daycares the rich literacy experience that research shows is critical to their development by providing story times, mini-collections and caregiver training. Approximately 144 children will experience the magic of library literacy programs and over 20 caregivers will be trained this year to continue the magic long after the library visits end. The third annual Write2Xpress writing contest (which will take place again this October) garnered over 50 entries last year. This contest enhances and develops literacy and creative writing skills for youth in Grades 7-12. Students submit a 1,500 word short story based on personal interpretations of a photograph to a committee of judges who award prizes based on a predetermined set of criteria. Author Visits and Workshops for Teens will provide Oakville youth with the opportunity to meet with published authors, gain insight into the world of publishing and learn the "tools of the trade" from experienced professionals. Emphasis will be placed on how to write creatively, how to get published and skills development for poetry and short fiction. The workshops will provide youth with access to recreational resources held by the library within a welcoming, supportive environment. Customers at the Oakville Public Library look for business information on three major topics: employment and career development, personal investment, and small business start-up. Signage and an information kiosk will be created to make business resources self-evident by identifying where the business collection is located. In partnership with community agencies such as the Halton Region's Business Development Centre a series of seminars will be developed to allow Oakville residents access to greater expertise. Our local history collection print assets are well used; however, a large portion of items cannot be borrowed from the library and many are out of print. We want to make this information available to the community and beyond by digitizing our local history collection and provide searchable metadata to the public for the print resources -- normally only accessible in the library. The library would like to thank its Friends for their continued support.
