Last year, while seeking donations in Shulman's River Oaks neighbourhood, Gordon convinced her to join the ranks of the 750 or so volunteers who knock on doors throughout town every April. "Simi was the most willing canvasser I have ever come across," said Gordon who has dedicated 35 years to the society. Shulman said `yes' immediately, hit the pavement the very next day and is back again this year. Gordon refers to Shulman as her "prize" of 2006. The invitation from Gordon was all that this new recruit really needed. "I always meant to do this kind of volunteering when I moved here four years ago from Toronto, but with two kids and work, canvassing was sidelined," said Shulman. She volunteers in honour of her sisterin-law who was a mother of two young children who died five years ago of colon cancer. Shulman has found, at most of the doors she knocks on, similar stories of friends and families impacted by cancer. The response from her neighbours has been great because Shulman and her two children, who tag along, are familiar faces. As much as the annual springtime campaign endeavours to raise funds for local services and research -- $178,000 was donated from the door-to-door effort last year -- the aim is to bring in more volunteers and educate residents about cancer. "We don't have anywhere near the number of people needed to cover all of the streets in town," said Gordon. Oakville has grown a lot and the northend is under-represented. Gordon and campaign chair Lori Williams are working to build up the numbers there. The society also needs new recruits in the south end of town to relieve volunteers whose arms Gordon has twisted year in and year out to stay on as canvassers. All too often the shortfall lands on the shoulders of these longtime volunteers. Gordon has now taken on three of the nine areas that divide Oakville and Shulman is expanding her coverage too. "I want to add more canvassers to the campaign so eventually I can just look after my own neighbourhood," said Gordon. She is hoping to come across another volunteer like Shulman in this year's campaign. Several are needed. There are currently about 750 canvassers but 1,900 would be the ultimate number to cover every neighbourhood in town. Shulman is doing her part to recruit others too, by dropping flyers in nearby community centres, arenas and schools. It takes only three hours to reach an average 20 houses on one route and just a $2 donation makes each knock at the door worthwhile, said Gordon.
