www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday March 24, 2007 - 9 Investing benefits all Continued from page 6 local governments the flexibility they need to maintain their unique identities. As MPP for Oakville, I understand the desire to see a responsible funding system to ensure our infrastructure and services meet the growing needs of our community. I work towards that end each and every day. I am proud to say that among other investments, we've seen nine new schools built in Halton school boards. Construction has begun for 2 new major bridges on the QEW and High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes to reduce congestion. A share of the gas tax is flowing to improve our local transit, and planning is underway for the construction of a third GO rail between Port Credit and Oakville to add greater capacity to GO Train service. For the first time in Ontario's history, the government released a five-year infrastructure investment plan in May 2005. With a $30-billion investment through Renew Ontario, our government is signaling a true renaissance for Ontario's public infrastructure. This government isn't just talking infrastructure -- we're building it. Infrastructure investments in our schools, universities, and colleges will total $10 billion by 2010. Transportation infrastructure will see investments valued at $11.4 billion by 2010. More than $7.5 billion in investments will also be dedicated to the Greater Golden Horseshoe. At the end of the day, this is a question about the kind of relationship our communities have with the Province of Ontario. We must continue to invest in our infrastructure needs, but we must also work together to tackle the tough question of how we can most effectively manage the resources we do have. Planning will facilitate this process along with the important investments, like those in Ontario's 2007 budget, to ensure results that benefit all of us. Police seek senior's attacker A 74-year-old Oakville man was assaulted Thursday night when he was pushed to the ground during an attempted robbery, say Halton Regional Police. The victim was walking home from a bookstore near 1169 Dorval Dr., and was steps from his house, police say, when he was approached from behind by someone armed with a knife. The suspect demanded money and the victim's wallet before he was pushed to the ground. Police say witnesses in the area heard the noise and turned on their outdoor lights causing the suspect to flee the area on foot. The victim lost no property but did suffer cuts to his hands that required stitches. He was treated at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital and released. The Halton Police's Oakville Criminal Investigations, Robbery Squad is investigating the report and looking for the culprit. The suspect is described as a white man, 19-20 years old, 5-foot9, 160 lbs, with short dark hair. He was wearing a darkcoloured winter coat. Anyone with information related to it is asked to contact the Oakville Criminal Investigations Bureau at 905 825-4777 or 905 634-1831, ext. 2215 or by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
