www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday March 28, 2007 - 5 Town approves 3.3 per cent tax increase for $166-M budget A 3.3 per cent property tax increase for 2007 was approved Monday night, as town councillors gave the nod to a $166 million operating budget for the year. The increase will cost homeowners an extra $10.93 on each $100,000 of property assessment. That means a home assessed at $400,000 will pay an additional $43.72 in town taxes this year. Add in the regional portion of the tax bill, which has increased by 2.5 per cent, and Oakville taxpayers will need to ante up an extra $21.07 per $100,000 of assessment this year. The budget, which features improved library services, a town-wide graffiti-reduction program and Budget passed without discussion or debate $150,000 to be spent to celebrate the town's 150th birthday, was approved with no discussion or debate by councillors. Town treasurer Patti Elliott-Spencer described the budget as "responsible, but achievable," and added that it "takes a balanced approach to the provision of services, while keeping our tax rates competitive." During meetings of the budget committee throughout February and March, Elliott-Spencer noted that about 2.5 per cent of the tax increase is a result of increased costs required to continue to provide the same services the town did in 2006. An additional one per cent has been added in to help finance projects in the $53.1 million capital budget. Rising expenses include salaries and benefits, utilities, fuel, office supplies and construction. However, assessment growth has offset some of those increases, she noted.
