Here are some of the ways we can assist one along their cancer journey: · Transportation- Get help traveling to your cancer-related appointments. · Peer Support- One-to-one and group support from others who have had a similar experience. · Prostate Cancer Support Group ­ Meets the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Oakville Unit. · Information for people living with cancer- The Canadian Cancer Society provides a wide range of supportive information for people living with cancer. Publications are available through the Oakville Unit or online at www.cancer.ca. · Practical support at cancer centres, lodges and community hospitals. · Cancer Information Service - The Cancer Information Service is a national, bilingual, toll-free service available to cancer patients, their families, the general public and healthcare professionals. This service offers comprehensive and credible information that is confidential and tailored to your needs. Call 1 888 939-3333 to speak with a trained Cancer Information Specialist. · Smokers' Helpline - A free, confidential telephone service offering support for quitting smoking. Relay For Life - Appleby College June 1-2, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Residents of Oakville will stay up all night, as they rally together to raise funds for the fight against cancer at this year's 6th annual Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life event on Friday, June 1 at Appleby College. Money raised at the unique, 12hour, overnight community event will fund life-saving cancer research and vital community-based support services that help people living with cancer in Oakville. "This overnight event is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for friends, families, neighbours and co-workers to come together with one ultimate goal ­ to eliminate cancer," says Lisa Moffatt, Fundraising Coordinator for the Oakville Unit. "Relay For Life is truly a celebration of life for anyone who has been touched by the disease." The event opens at 7 p.m. with the Survivors' Victory Lap, where cancer survivors lead the way around the track as a celebration of their strength and courage. At dusk, the Luminary Ceremony takes place, allowing people to honour others who have been touched by cancer by lighting candles that are placed around the track.
