Crop for a Cure to raise money for brain tumour research Two local scrapbookers have joined forces to create a day of scrapbooking and album making in the first annual Crop For A Cure in support of the Brain Tumour Research assistance and information network (b.r.a.i.n.) child. Crop for a Cure is the first event organized by Oakville residents and avid album makers Mary Panetta and Alyson Colosia. The event is the second held in Oakville in support of a local charity; last year's event benefited the Canadian Diabetes Association. Crop for a Cure will be Saturday, April 21 from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. at St. Simon's Anglican Church on Litchfield Road in Oakville. The event will be sponsored by many local merchants and organizations. Tickets cost $35 and will include lunch, and a day of scrapbooking and story sharing. In an effort to continue to support charities through positive activities, Panetta and Colosia have again joined to support a charity with a strong community network. "Oakville is a great community with a great focus on giving to charity," said Colosia, an Oakville native. "We have already had an overwhelming response from the community in terms of donations and support," said Colosia. The event is being held to raise funds to support b.r.a.i.n child in its objective -- to promote the continued growth of Brainchild, and encourage participation of those whose personal experience makes them uniquely qualified to provide support for families dealing with this serious illness. The charity also assists with educational research, and the distribution of information about brain tumors through newsletters, pamphlets and seminars. The charity is familiar to many Oakville residents as one of the strongest supporters is Kathy Douthart, a teacher at St. John School who has tirelessly raised awareness and funds through many events, most notably the Rigatoni for Research dinner held annually. To date, she has raised over $1 million for the Sick Kids charity. Douthart's seven-year-old son Christopher passed away in August 1997 as a result of a brain tumour.
