In particular, Lisa Horner as Miss Adelaide steals the show with her singing and comedic timing. Leah Oster, as Sarah Brown, displays an excellent singing voice, perhaps the best of the four main characters. Unfortunately the male leads -- Larry Mannell as Nathan Detroit, Derek Marshall as Sky Masterson -- fail to rise to the same level as their female counterparts on stage. Perhaps this is because they are unable to escape comparisons to screen legends Marlon Brando (Sky Masterson) and Frank Sinatra (Nathan Detroit) in the 1950's film version. Admittedly, those are big shoes to fill. Guys and Dolls is based on the upbeat characters of Damon Runyon, written by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows, with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser. Set designer Samantha Burson creates a memorable set on the confined Stage West stage presenting a New York that may have only existed in our fantasies with skyscrapers, nightclubs, dance halls and theatres. The romantic comedy centres around bad boy gambler Sky Masterson's attempt to win the heart of Sarah Brown, a Salvation Army girl. Countering this is Miss Adelaide's hope that some day Nathan Detroit will end their lengthy engagement with a wedding date. Among the many extras of gamblers and dance hall girls, Avery Saltzman shines as Nicely Nicely Johnson. Whether it is the size of Saltzman's nose, his toothy smile, or his loud yellow-plaid jacket, it is extremely difficult to ignore the actor when he's on stage. His version of Sit Down You're Rockin' The Boat is one of the best numbers in the show thanks to his timing and near-perfect choreography. Other notable songs include Luck to be a Lady, and of course the title song Guys and Dolls. Costume Designer Ivan Brozac also chips in with an array of colourful suits fit for the gamblers and con artists of New York. The play continues until April 29.
