The seminar hosted by Halton Healthcare Services will be held at 7 p.m. in Milton. It is being held in partnership with the Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada, the Canadian Cancer Society and Wellspring. Colorectal cancer is cancer of the colon and/or rectum. In 2006, an estimated 20,000 people in Canada were diagnosed with the disease. Men and women are diagnosed in nearly equal numbers. Of those, an estimated 8,500 died from colorectal cancer. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in Canada. However, it is one of the most preventable cancers, because it can develop from polyps that can be removed before they become cancerous. Prevention tips can include regular screening tests, regular exercise and healthy weight maintenance with a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains. At greatest risk are men and women age 50 and older. Symptoms in the early stages may be absent. Later, the following symptoms may appear: rectal bleeding; blood in or on the stool (bright red); a change in bowel habits; stools that are narrower than usual; general stomach discomfort (bloating, fullness and/or cramps); diarrhea, constipation or feeling that the bowel does not empty completely; frequent gas pains; weight loss for no apparent reason and constant fatigue. Men and women at average risk should begin regular screening at age 50. If you are at greater risk, you may need to begin regular colorectal cancer screening at an earlier age. There are many options for screening including a fecal occult blood test, sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy or double contrast barium enema. If you have a personal or family history of colorectal cancer, benign colorectal polyps, inflammatory bowel disease, or breast, ovarian or endometrial cancer, talk to your health care provider about earlier and more frequent screening. Treatment options are also numerous. If diagnosed with colorectal cancer, please talk with your oncology team about which is best for you. Surgery is the most common treatment. Chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy is given before or after surgery to about half of the patients with colorectal cancer, primarily those with more advanced disease. At the seminar, Dr. Jeff Kolbasnik, HHS general surgeon will present information about colorectal cancer and a question-and-answer period will follow the formal presentation. The presentation will be held at the Southside Community Church. Displays will be available at 6:30 p.m. and the presentation will begin at 7 p.m. To reserve call 905-338-4379 or e-mail elittle@haltonhealthcare.on.ca.
